Dempsey is easily Top 10 in History, that opinion was universal right up to the late 1960s. Legendary IBHOF trainer Ray Arcel claimed Jack Dempsey was the greatest right up to the day he died aged 93. “A Dempsey fight was magic,” Arcel told the New York Times in 1983. “The minute he walked into the ring you could see smoke rising from the canvas. You knew you were going to see a tiger let loose…Dempsey would have had a picnic with most of today’s fighters.” Gene Tunney was sat ringside in 1978 in Las Vegas, for Holmes vs Norton Heavyweight Title fight. After the fight Tunney was interviewed at ringside and claimed, Jack Dempsey would have knocked out both Holmes and Norton, in the first round.
It is ok for you to now rubbish Arcel and Tunney, and say "What do they know about boxing" compared to you, sat on your PC logged into this forum. But the list is very long of fighters and boxing men, who made claim of Jack Dempsey's greatness. Sam Langford claimed him to be the greatest fighter he ever set eyes on. Jack Sharkey was another who claimed him to be the greatest.. Today's fighters are totally different in every way than pre-1970 fighters, due to PEDs
