Victor and Brandon both trained and boxed together in Garden City, Kansas at the the P.A.L. Boxing gym in back of the old Salvation Army building. As kids they both were wild and often in trouble. Trainer and gym owner Robert Gonzales an ex-marine and then cop started the gym to get all the kids and gang bangers off the street. He would take them to the gym instead of jail. Both Ortiz and Rios were too young to get into that sort of trouble but they were a handful none the less. Gonzales sought out a local amateur boxing hero named Bucky Avila to help train. Then as Brandon joined the gym his father Manuel Rios soon followed. Victor and Rios were friendly rivals at first but as things became more serious so did their relationship. When Victor 's mother left Victor 's dad, Victor Sr. Victor pretty much ran the steets. What Victor does not tell in his tall tale of woe is why his mother left. She was being physically abused and beaten regularly. Victor Sr. is a drunken, unpredictable and violent man. He proudly wears and lives upto the name of Diablo. Rios first started to dislike Victor when he started to lie about his own mom and call her awful names. He tells everyone that his mom completely left him. Yet his mom was around him and traveled with him to amateur boxing shows all the way up to the age of 13. The next rift in their relation ship took place when Diablo while watching Rios beat Victor up while sparring threatened Brandon ' s dad Manuel. Diablo threatened to get a gun and shoot both Manuel and Brandon.

They were pretty tight friends. Rios use to help Ortiz in street fights too. They really want to fight each other bad, so they might as well get a check for it. I like it.

Diablo also threatened to shoot and kill trainer Robert Gonzales. Robert ordered Diablo out the gym. That started a long history of run ins by Diablo with Gonzales the cop. When Rios and Ortiz were both teenagers Gonzales and Bucky Avila had a falling out and Avila left to help to start another gym in town. Victor left with him and Rios stayed with his dad Manuel at the P.A.L. There has been an uneasy co-existince of the two gyms ever since. The boxers at the P.A.L change the name of their gym to Bad Boyz because so many of them were first time or multiple offenders. Victor was getting into so much trouble in school that he left Garden and moved to Denver, Colorado to live with his sister and that is where he met Ron Lyle and started training at his gym. Rios stayed in Garden until he left to go to the Olympic trials. While at the Olympic trials he met Robert Garcia and then moved to Oxnard. The Rios family are close to Victor ' s mom and her family. They all became angered with the lies Victor told about and is still telling about her. Victor ' mom still lives in Garden City. She never left completely.

Then as fate would have it Rios and Ortiz both wound up in Oxnard with Robert Garcia and things went further south there. Ortiz was jealous of the time and attention that Garcia gave the other boxers. Including Brandon and he conspired with Garcia ' brother Danny to train him and no one but him. Ortiz ego is huge even tho his heart is small.

Brandon is a loyal person and team is everything to him. Garcia is like a brother to him and Ortiz talked a lot of crap and told a lot of lies about Garcia. Victor tried to frighten Rios and his wife Vickie with a mock hit. Where a man hired by Ortiz came to Vickie's home and banished a gun and threatened to shoot both Brandon and Vickie. Vickie fell and hurt herself trying to run away. She had to go to the hospital. Now Ortiz is spreading terrible lies about Brandon ' wife. A woman who Victor has only seen and never met. This is just the tip of the iceberg but it is enough to cause Rios to hate Ortiz.

One interesting dynamic to the story is the fact that most white people in Garden City (until recently) loved Victor Ortiz and either disliked Brandon or did not know who he was. Whereas most Mexicans love Rios and can't stand Ortiz. I said Until Recently about Ortiz because he has had several run ins with the law and the public on his visits to Garden. Not too long ago he was physically removed from a local club for making fun of a female barmaid's handicapped son. He was so loud and rowdy they made him leave.

This makes a lot of sense. Ortiz rubs just about everybody the wrong way.

Rainman, this is only a snap shot of a long history of mini to major conflicts between these two.

Yes it is me. I actually started posting at this sight right after it started. In fact I started a few months after the sight began. I got banned and booted for a short time for a negative post of my now good friend farmboxer. I was flatlander47 back then. I joined around 16 years ago.

Right on man! I used to post on this site when it was just called Eastside boxing and you didn't have an account, you would just write a screen name and enter your post and that was it. This was back in 2009. I used to post at NSB and still do occasionally , but I like this site better!

Man we use to have some hardcore debates back then. I use to have a long lasting thread of a Boxing League game. The game sight finally either crashed or went broke. I think we had over 60k posts before it ended. I have lost track of many of the old poster.

So the boxing league game you had, is it similar to Kirk's championships?
