I think roids hit the mainstream boxing world in the '80's.

Possibly there were a few backyard experimenters in the '70's, but imo not many, despite roids being rife in other sports.

Weight training for boxing only became popular in the late '80's...and steroid use is a good deal further down the road of experimentation than weights. I can't see it being widely used at all in the 70's, let alone 60's.

Since the late '80's and early '90's their usage has been worldwide, but for me, only maybe dabbled with on a small scale before then.

I think the most likely user from the 70's would have been Ron Lyle.....

My guess is that Toney would be around 200 lbs as a HW if his body fat was somewhere below 10%, as is normal for a top athlete. So that would be 20 lbs more of solid muscle than when he weighed in at 181 lbs in his first fight at CW (against McCallum) when he was 29. He looked pretty slim in that one (probably around 10% body fat), and since he was so comfortably below the weight limit he likely hadn't done any extra cutting, just gotten into good shape.

Do you think Toney could have gotten so big in the 1950s and Be so functional with it?

I think the reason why Toneys career stalled for as long as it did between the Jones and Jirov fights was because he couldn't find the right drugs. For about seven years he was slammed in the press for looking like a good fighter who would not train then (all of a sudden) he beat Jirov and Holyfeild!

I doubt very much whether Tyson was on steroids. The reason? I figure he'd have told us by now. Yes, most people on steroids tend to spend their lives denying it - presumably for the twin reasons that it's very much ***** move to take steroids in any competitive sport and partucularly combat sports, and because the fragile egos of losers who do take them can't really stand up to admitting they have in effect 'cheated' - but Tyson has been alarmingly honest about most aspects of his life. Some very low moments are thrown right out there in his autobiography, for example, but my guess is he never sunk to the level of taking steroids while actively boxing.
Simply had great genes and, as a young man, an extraordinary appetite for training would be my assumption.

Being stronger at the same weight is not a weakness. Taking steroids in general is a sign of mental weakness, at best, and if you box a sign of extreme cowardice.

I would guess that he didn't.

He doesn't really carry excess weight and his frame is naturally big.
And today at 67 years old, he still looks big and strong.

I see no reason why Foreman could not easily get that big without steroids.

Some people are just genetically pre-disposed to build muscle. Combine that with good nutrition and exercise, and there you go. Did Charles Atlas use steroids? Or, to reach even further back, there are classical Greek and Roman statues that show considerable muscular development. Steroids?

Now, clearly the modern bodybuilders that make He-Man look like a wimp are on something, as are the guys that become huge while lifting nothing more than a glass of beer. But that's not the case, imho, with Foreman.

Tyson was a science lab experiment. Taken from a young offenders prison as an orphan child, trained full time, at the mercy of a crazy old boxing trainer, backed by two ruthless business men, where money was no object?

I get the impression that the Tyson brain trust had access to every possible advantage. There was a race on to get the child prodigy to the title and into the money. Fortunes had been spent on his progress.

Why wouldn't he be on PED's?

GF didn't even look like a steriod user, nevermind that the time line and his history don't add up. Next up will be Primo Carnera as suspect of the day.
