This is why I'm picking Kovalev on points. I'm thinking Kovalev's power puts Ward either into a shell or a semi-shell. Ward survives, as Hopkins did, but he gets beat on points in the end. As IB says, however, if Ward's pride gets the best of him then it could be a Kovalev T/KO win.
Would love for Ward to put on a clinic but my gut is telling me that kovalev will be too much for him. Kovalev is much more dynamic than he gets credit for and will be able to do damage even if it takes him a few rounds. Kovalev TKO9
Got a different angle on this from the video Rummy posted in another thread. It actually wasn't even a tap on the abdomen from Kovalev, it was a mutual fist-bump. Andre's hand was just held up very close against his chest, not visible from this angle.
Think it's a bit simplistic to just call Kovalev a puncher - he's more of a boxer-puncher, for me. I think his ability to box was cemented in the Hopkins fight and whilst that was an old Hopkins, B-Hop still doesn't get outboxed by bums.
I'm actually surprised, only insofar that most of the polls I've seen seemed to slightly favor Kovalev, whereas this particular one is edging ever so slightly the other direction.
Sorry, didn't realize my thread had ANYTHING to do with Golovkin. Please hang on while I scan for whatever clues I missed that it did.
Is anybody else kind of rooting for a FOTY draw? That would basically spell the beginning of the greatest rivalry since Márquez–Vázquez (even if the rematch were a blowout KO1, it still by necessity would give us a third roll of the dice as somebody would then be an unsatisfactory 1-0-1...and then, with a reversal of fortune to knot it up we could have a tetralogy!! )
I wish there was a big fight once a month that had people this split on who they think will prevail. The v-cash (or whatever the modern equivalent is) seems to tell the same tale.
That would be sweet. I have officially mentioned the hope that this could be but the first chapter of an amazing memorable trilogy. Would be awesome if things panned out that way - and honestly, it would probably be the absolute best thing that could happen to both Ward and Kovalev. Too many Alis without a Frazier these days.
Imagine the reaction if both Kovalev-Ward and Gvozdyk-Chilemba end in KO1 victories for Sergey and Oleksandr. Most of the posters will be in such denial they'll just ignore the results altogether, kind of like how CNN pretended WikiLeaks didn't exist.

Went for Ward on points. But this could go either way and that is reflected by the poll being split right down the middle.
