Kov won 115-112. Not a big robbery but those judges giving Ward every round for 6 onwards stank. The fix was in.
What a fight. Hopefully they rematch soon. Before this fight I thought Kovalev would get to Ward and either stop him or punish him for 12 like the Hopkins fight in '14. After the 2nd round I thought Ward looked terrible and was going to get badly beaten and definitely stopped and this was to be Kovalevs night. Ward managed to get through round 3 and then I have to give him major credit for what he done next. After this he was having a look at Kovalev, figuring him out and he adjusted himself accordingly in the following rounds to turn the fight around. Some rounds were very close and hard to score but more often than not it was Ward evading Kovalevs shots and landing one or two of his own. Towards the end of the fight it didn't look like Kovalev would be able to stop Ward. At final bell I thought it was extremely close and a draw would have been fair, and a close decision for either fighter would have been understandable too. There has been so much discussion about the result so I hope the rematch puts it beyond doubt.
Had ward one round up in the end And I was rooting for Kov Kov couldnt land clean and was hesitant to let his hands go in later rounds Just because you come forward doesnt always mean your being effective
All about opinions mate and I was very bored watching this fight as I equally was for most of Floyd's fights and Gavin v Skeete type of fights. The only surprise for me last night is that we had a good round 2. Compare the Krusher v Ward fight to Gavin v Egginton, Conlan v Nelson or Crolla v Barrosa and you will see where I am coming from.
Fair enough. I'm actually a fan of the strategic type fights. Sure there was a fair bit of holding but I thought some of the jabs for instance were a thing of beauty. Ward's inside work where he was landing clean body punches was just sublime - I think a lot of the people screaming robbery missed these punches and those were what totally took the sting out of Kovalev's punches in the second half of the fight. I thought the fight was good and it could have been far worse.
I had a go at scoring the fight as I watched. Haven't seen it twice. I had Ward 1 point up at the end. Where I Have labeled the round only just I could understand arguments for the other fighter. Wouldn't have complained if it was a draw or Kovalev nicked it but think the right fella won. RD1 K Clear RD2 K + KD RD3 K only just RD4 W only just RD5 W Clear RD6 K only just RD7 W Clear RD8 W Clear RD9 W Clear RD10 K Clear RD11 W only just RD12 W only just
This is exactly how I scored it. I won't argue with anybody who had Kovalev winning as some of them rounds could've went either way.
My scorecard: Round 1 10/9 SK Round 2 10/8 SK Round 3 10/9 SK Round 4 10/9 SK (just) Round 5 10/9 AW (just) Round 6 10/9 SK Round 7 10/9 AW Round 8 10/9 AW Round 9 10/9 AW (just) Round 10 10/9 SK Round 11 10/9 AW (just) Round 12 10/9 SK (just) 115-112 Kovalev.
We only marked round 4 and 12 different but both marked it as 'just' yet it would have made a huge difference to the fight result. My brother went for Kov as well. the fight will defiantly split opinions.
Having 3 American judges always helps tho eh? Especially if your an American fighting the bad Russian guy? It was such a close fight to call yet every judge went for Ward
Ward by 1. 114-113. Very close could of went either way. I thought ward did the better work second half of the fight. Just think he controlled the fight more.
This is how I scored it... 10-9 K 10-8 K 10-9 W 10-10 Draw 10-9 W 10-9 K 10-9 W 10-9 W 10-9 W 10-9 K 10-9 W 10-9 K So I had it as 114-114. I really enjoyed the fight. I admire both fighters and don't lean towards a particular one.
