Kovalev-Ward: Swing Rounds and Clean Punches

Who here scored round 10 for Ward? You have no idea how crooked a judge can be and being crooked has nothing at all to do with a close score card.

Let me guess, you probably agree with the Lewis vs Holyfield draw too. Those scorecards stunk

Most in the media and at the fight felt Kovalev won it.

 

I remember Floyd fanboys ignoring these videos after Pac vs May because they showed Pac winning. I had Mayweather winning live by the way. I never bothered with the slow mo, etc. I had Floyd winning when I saw it twice the normal way and that's my final assessment of the fight.

But now Ward fanboys (who coincidentally, are almost all Mayweather fans) will take these seriously if they show Ward winning. Watch them see it in slow mo after ridiculing Manny fans.

 

Maybe it was not fixed, but for me round 10 is a good gauge to measure how much of a scoring margin kov has to overcome to win a round that he didn't hurt ward. To me this expectation is unfair to kov.

 

Great video. I do, however, slightly disagree that clean punches landed outweigh the three other scoring criteria, which I know is not necessarily your opinion but was mentioned at the beginning, and I'll explain why. For me, the percentage of punches landed which were thrown is more important in a very close fight. Kovalev threw more and landed a few more but his success percentage was lower. Which means he was more often made to miss than Ward. Throwing more punches that miss surely marks in favour of the boxer who forced these errors, their defence and ring generalship and against the aggressor for the simple reason it was not effective. Just my take.

 

Missed punches should not count toward the boxer who didn't get hit. Judges have no way of knowing if a fighter was using throwaway punches to set up another punch or if a "missed" punch was actually very convincing feint. Adding that criteria would cause confusion in the scoring, add even more objectiveness than we already have, and overall create more unreliable scores.

 

I know defense is very subjective, but couldnt one say ward threw less punches because he didn't see the offensive opportunities? or put it in another way, kov show good defense in range, movement etc.

Fair point in many ways, but judges do have ways of distinguishing between feints, set-up punches and simple misses. The first two would ordinarily proceed a successful connection, for them not to do so would mark even more in favour of the defending fighter who would have successfully reacted to a feint and the follow up punch ie: two levels of attack as opposed to one. And whether you like it or not, being made to miss (or blocked) does count in favour of the defending fighter, it's how defence is scored, and reflects ring generalship too, and marks the attack down on the grounds of effective aggression. Clean punches landed does not and should not solely define how a fight is judged.

 

Fair point.... you could indeed say that. As you say, scoring is very subjective.

 

Ward is inferior to Kova, and the whole world besides the three American judges saw it. If you have to watch the fight from multiple angles, have to watch it in slow motion and watch the fight 20 times in order to convince yourselves that Ward somehow won, then it should be obvious. What I find comical is how you actually think Kova lost despite the blatant robbery. This is reaching Pacfans level of ridiculousness post MayPac.

 

3 Jabs and a hook to the back of the head, impressive...not. You left out a lot of scoring punches for Kovalev, but the first combination alone is better than anything that Ward did.
