I thought kov won it (i thought he won the 10th round which the judges gave Ward) but it was close. I think the fight was interesting because it did not play out the way many supporters of both fighters thought. I think many Ward supporters thought Ward would school Kovalev and it would be boring and Kov would just be missing everything and getting tagged all time. Too slow and too one dimensional. That's not what happened. Kovalev was a lot better than that. Also, I think many Kov supporters thought kov would steamroll him and knock him out. That's not what happened either. Ward proved very durable and strong and though he went down, he could take the hits. So while I'm disappointed kov didnt get the win, I'm not very so since both fighters did well and showed they are more skilled than their harshest detractors say and I feel at least it was in many ways a fight that was a challenge for both.
One thing i think ward did well was to affect Kovalev emotionally. He did this with apparent displays of disrespect or indifference like not shaking hands or being buddy buddy with him. I think this threw kovalev off cause this is the way he wanted to be with ward.. friendly, respectful and to get a little back. I think kovalev has to remember that it doesn't matter if Ward is his best friend in the world or hates him, he has to fight the same... smart and with very bad intentions. I'm going to kick his ass because he didn't show respect is stupid. His attitude should be I'm going to kick his ass because it is a boxing match and we are not there to be friends. The level should always be ass kicking. Not some new level because you are angry. Anger/arrogance is just going to make you preoccupied and probably less precise and more urgent and its draining over time. He needs to fight smarter and not care about how ward treats him or what Ward thinks.
Fights are/SHOULD be based on who lands more, who lands harder, and who inflicts more damage. If this was an amateur fight, it would have been closed just based on punches landed, mind you Kov would have still won because he landed more. But based on actual damage, the fight wasn't remotely close. Ward got beat up, and just because he basically survived and had moments where he held his own, there's a minority out there that somehow think he deserved a W. and probably 90% of those are Ward fans or Kov haters.
I remember in the build up to Johnny Tapia-Paulie Ayala 1 when they were doing the promo tours they struck up a real friendship. They laughed joked & had fun together everyone doubted they could fight each other As you know that fight ended up a barn burner Fight of the Year . I got them both to sign a poster. Paulie signed it To C.J Thanks for the support Paulie Ayala Future WBA champ . Johnny saw this & signed That's what he thinks God Bless C.J. Johnny Tapia. Great memories of two great guys
SOB Ward is a coward, he runs, holds, grabs Kovalev's leg, etc., now SOB is afraid to fight Kovalev again. SOB must find a way to cheat, but Kovalev will knock SOB out cold.................Kovalev is still the champion, Ward did not win Kovalev's belts, Kovalev won the belts, then Ward was given the belts by his personal judges........................................Kovalev clearly won the fight, no doubt about it...............
lol what? Fights are scored on a ROUND BY ROUND basis. This isn't amateur boxing so I'm not sure why you're bringing up that point. P4P King Ward won rounds 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, 11 and 12 to win the fight 114-113. All I see are people crying, trying to convince themselves and others that it was a robbery when they clearly don't know how to score a fight. It's constantly " wwaaahhhhhh Kova out punched and out landed SOB Ward plus got a knockdown. It's not faaaaiiiiiirrrr, Ward is an American hero(lol) the judges were in his pocket and they're wacist. Yes Vegas is the fighting capital of the world, yes Kova is promoted by Americans, yes he's a stable in the American network HBO and yes, he does indeed live in the USA and is an American citizen... still wacist though."
Another foreigner that couldn't get the benefit of the doubt. Joins Khan, Matthysse, Kotelnik, Campillo, Lennox Lewis, Abril, Castillo, Marquez, Sam Peter, etc.
But round 10 was clearly a Kovalev round which swung the fight. You have to be intellectually honest. He got robbed out of that round at least
