If he had met Benitez at welter he would have lost his titles.I don't think Duran could stay at welter he couldn't maintain.the weight.
Kind of makes you wonder what Toney could have achieved if he'd stayed at super middleweight. Both those poor boys just ate their way into divisions 30 percent heavier than where they started.
Well, then it's Duran's own fault if he lacked professionalism, discipline. You're just making another excuse for him. "Well he had a history of gorging himself between fights, so it's unfair he be required to meet standards of professionalism and discipline other champions are held to." Why should Duran be given different considerations than everyone else. Yes, apparently he did lack the professionalism of a guy like Randall - who sucked it up, trained is A$$ off and performed just as well after only a 3 month layoff. History will only remember that Duran was schooled and quit in the Leonard rematch.. No matter how many of his loyalists try to spin it.
But is there any previous fight where he is thought to have badly underperformed due to binge eating between fights?
I'm a huge Duran fan, but there is no excuse for his lack of preparation and professionalism. Nor is there any excuse for his quitting against Leonard. End of. Having written that, yes, in answer to your question. In the non-title DeJesus fight that he lost, he fought that fight at 140.
Maybe, but I just don't see it that way. Hearns chin would always be suspect, even at 147. A focused tenancious duran could very well beat that version of Tommy imo
I don't see the way he beat Leonard as being a successful strategy against Hearns. I think Tommy would catch him with something big coming in.
How so? If you watch most of SRL fights, sans Tommy Hearns, he didn't push the action. He much preferred to have the actions come to him and use his physical attributes to outbox them, and generally KO them. It's not like SRL didn't have power or snap is his punch, nor does Tommy have faster hand speed than SRL, nor does Tommy prefer fighters to press the action like SRL does. Yet SRL wasn't able to get the job done, and I'm saying, Tommy very well might not as well with that type of Duran.
