**** this clown from CBS. Since October of 2005 Pavlik has fought;
Zuniga
McKart
Pierre
Zertuche
Miranda
and Taylor twice!

If you count JT twice since there were two fights, Pavlik's last 7 opponents had a combined 197 fights with a collective 152 knock outs! Lockett is the WBO mandatory, the WBU titlist at 160, and has only 1 loss on his record; a loss he avenged. Clearly this jack ass from CBS doesn't know **** from peanut butter!!

 

He is a mandatory, Pavlik is the lineal champ, and he just gave a rematch to the guy whose title he took. He has already expressed interest in fighting Abraham, and by rights he should hold all the titles to begin with.

What happened to the days when a guy made title defenses? Not every defense has to be an elite level guy. Lockett has a good record and will be a sold victory for Kelly

Wright priced himself out of a fight.
Abraham doesn't want to fight Pavlik til 2009.
Sturm doesn't want to fight Pavlik ever.
Duddy got himself cut up in an ugly win.
Calzaghe if he even really wants to probably won't fight Pavlik til November.

Who's left? A bunch of European fighters who the most of the US haven't heard of before? Griffin, Lorenzo, Rubio? None of them are really any better a choice than Lockett.

Might as well burn a #1 Mandatory early so he's free to fight the better fights later.

 

OOPS! My bad. for some reason I was thinking the second fight was a quick KO for Lockett. I edited the other post, and took the "brutal" part out.

 

fighting a bum doesn't make you a bum. But losing to one does, so Pavlik should be careful

anyways Lockett is not a bum but he is definately a sacrificial lamb, to the point where Arum didn't want Lockett to have a showcase fight because he might end up with another Dudd(y).

Other than Abraham, who is left at MW? Abraham is willing. His fight with Miranda is for US exposure. They need to build him up some. If he beats Miranda, then this is a fight worth making. Otherwise, no one that can compete with Pavlik at MW at the moment unless there is some 'sleeper' out there. Sturm won't fight Abraham. I think he was offered close to $2.4 million? So sturm is out of the question.

 

Give the guy a break 1st Miranda and then Taylor twice, Kelly is not a frontrunner and he won his title the hard way against tough and talented fighters this man deserves an easy one and especially if its a mandatory.

 

I Know!!! That's what gets me about a fight like this. Hardly anybody outside a small pocket of hardcore UK fans know anything about this guy. I feel strongly that Pav will win (as I always do ), but damn will critiqs crash down like thunder if Pavlik doesn't blow this cat out in under 5.

 

CBS Sports? Give me a break. This guy was probably one of the morons who were saying that Mayweather/DLH I was the fight that would "save" boxing. Pavlik just had a 3-fight stretch against Miranda and Jermain Taylor. This is a bum of the month club???

It doesn't hurt to mix a mandatory in every now and then. You keep your belt and you stay active, which is good considering that there may not be a bigger fight available at that particular time. Lockett's nothing special but he is the WBO's #1 guy and there are alot worse fighters than him out there so overall there's really no problem here.

 

Pavlik has to fight Lockett because he's the WBO mandatory. Otherwise, he will be stripped of the title.

Personally I would prefer Pavlik vs. Wright, but Kelly has no choice but to fight his mandatories.

I'm surprised that some people don't understand what a "mandatory" is.

I don't necessarily disagree, but Arum's comments indicate that they chose to fight Pavlik rather than several named alternatives.

 

You are right, but I think the other names were the WBC mandatories that will eventually have to be dealt with as well. Lockett does appear, from where I'm sitting to be maybe the softest touch of the bunch, but he is indeed the WBO mandatory that would have to be done at some time as well. And after the 4 fight run he's been on, why not get the light work out the way real quick.

I think he wants to get any manadories over quickly to leave his door open to bigger fights.
