Which is exactly the reason you shouldn't be doing it in sparring. Besides, you're sparring partner shouldn't need to be reminded that it's sparring.
I think the benefits I put down ouweigh that though, and yeah your partner shouldn't need reminding but they often do
Not really. You shouldn't pick up bad habits when you train and that is a bad habbit. I've also seen someone get knocked out doing that.
Everyone at my gym hits gloves, it's personal judgment I guess. I would be kinda pissed if someone didn't tap mine back though. It's obnoxious of you people to say that good sportsmanship and friendliness is wrong in my opinion.
I haven't boxed in ages, but when I did my gym was always full of wannbe thugs. They'd come to the gym dressed like Ali G, won't strech or warm up beforehand, grab some gloves and go nuts on the heavybag. Problem is that they had no technique whatsoever and kept on throwing what I call the ''Thug Punch''. Which is a looping, off balance haymaker while on one leg, it was pure slapstick to see them throw the 'Thug Punch', bounce off the heavybag or stumble all over the place and have that look of bewilderment that the heavybag didn't atomized due to their sheer power or some ****. Seeing them spar is even funnier. :rofl Other annoyng things people do in the gym: Do some ropework, get a bit sweaty and spend all day just walking round flexing, looking in the mirrors. Guys who would just stand near some equippment, say they're using it but in reality don't and take a break People who hang round gyms doing nothing. They arn't even training or wearing gym clothes. They've just walked off the streets with some mates, know someone training at the gym and just wander about, talking, distracting everyone and getting in everyone's way.
Gotta confess, i'm the muay thai guy, but I do train it seriously and I always ask boxing gym coaches/owners if i can kick the bags before i do. I NEVER kick it with shoes on (a good sign a guy doesn't know what he's doing) and haven't heard any bad comments from the gyms who have let me. I tend to get the benefit of the doubt, coz kicks tend to be about twice the power of a punch - i'm usually folding even the biggest bags with a loud 'boom" and sending it flying. The stuff that always got me: kicking a bag with shoes on (see above) guys hitting the bags with mma gloves for about 30 seconds; all-out, with atrocious form, before spending the next 5 minutes talking to their boy about it (had to wait through a good 7 "rounds" of this while waiting for a bag) Local tough guys coming on saturdays to go hard with their "no head contact" body sparring People who do their workouts & spar with the same cruddy pair of Everlast gloves from the local sporting store The guy hitting the bag with the rattan escrima stick The guy who's excuse for hitting hard in sparring is "you ran into it" but then whines when he "runs into" a hard shot himself wannabe mma tough guys (the pro mma guys I know are cool) The guy with cr@ppy form that tries to correct everything you do (As a lot of people have mentioned) the guys who treat sparring like competition
I work out in MMA gloves and so do most of the guys at my gym. Your right the guys who are wannabes and just walk in off the streets from doing MMA act so ****ing dumb. I saw one today talking **** the getting guintined over and over then complaining his neck hurt and he left. The pros are indeed cool real laid back guys.
It wasn't the MMA gloves so much - though the guys I'm talking about usually wear the cheapest, rattiest pair available (I'm not talking Fairtex or Combat Sports International gloves). The problem was more about wearing these gloves to a fitness gym, hitting the bag with terrible technique, gassing super-quick, and making me wait around while they chatted about "technique". Wannabe "cagefighters" are getting annoying though. I usually just respond "ahh, I just do muay thai" and get kinda weird looks - tends to be a conversation killer.
