Speed kills: Roy Jones Jr vs James Toney

Great stuff, bud!

 

Ah yes, my senior year in high school. I told everyone Jones would win, half heartedly. Couldn't stand Toney at the time but now I can reflect on their fight and appreciate everything both fighters did that night.

Love both fighters but RJJ showed his superiority that night. Speed kills!!!

Up until that point RJJ had the goods, but with someone like Toney reigning supreme at the top of the P4P rankings you weren't too sure if Jones could knock him off his perch. I'm sure it wasn't easy but with RJJ it looked that way. What a great night to celebrate! Excellent work by the way!!

 

What did Toney do beside show up and not get stopped? RJJ completely outclassed him and i don't think Toney showed much at all in this particular fight beside good durability.

 

Toney got beat up pretty badly. Dominated. He did show good durability and tried hard to get back into the fight yet kept getting schooled. It was a great win for RJJ over the #2/3 P4P fighter at the time.

Roy Jones was simply superb in that night....

 

James Toney constantly fought the battle of the bulge and as such he would have had to waste before many fights. James was a master at getting the other guy to fight in his preffered zone. History suggests he had only put one onto Roy like he had onto Michael Nunn. Roy was his master that night.

 

Never has an atg beat another atg by such a wide margin I'm more a fan of Toney but Roy destroyed him that night

 

Toney lack of discipline hurt him here he was severely weight drained which sapped his energy. Not taking anything away from Roy this was a nightmare matchup for Toney who never had the legs to compete with Jones who could disappear from range in the blink of an eye.
Roy was incredible on this night and clearly showed he was the better fighter.
Toney still has so many magical nights ahead I still watch the Jirov war. Toney was one of the greats. So relaxed, plus an amazing chin and durability. Natural feel for the sport knew how to in fight and roll better than anyone.
