Chris Eubank: 'Toney is the greatest middleweight of all-time!'

No surprise really.

Toney was a master of the style Eubank tried employing.

 

I wouldn't think it's predictable at all...that Eubank would say this about Toney. I don't think Toney was exactly on his Christmas card list...no love lost between the two I'd reckon...

 

If Eubank could make his opponent miss in the pocket he would not have moved as much. His reflexes just as weren't as quick and his timing wasn't as good which us why he had to rely more on foot movement and a solid jab.

First off Tiberi retired so the rematch was never an option for Toney.
Toney never ducked anyone the dude was fearless..

2nd I encourage anyone who hasn't scored this fight to do so.. I remember watching the fight live back then and being disgusted by the fact that Tiberi was robbed.. But the Toney post fight interview always struck me as odd because he seemed certain he'd won. He said the crowd roaring for any and everything Tiberi did wasn't evidence of what really went on. So I scored the fight (back then)and sure enough I had Toney winning a razor thin close decision. Now I was 16 at the time and have never once looked back on the fight again so take this for what it is.. I may have to give it another go when I get a chance..

No Toney isn't the greatest middleweight of all time but he was a great fighter without question. I watched his entire career and he was one of the best when he was in top shape..

 

Even Toney himself now admits Tiberi beat him.

 

Toney never ducked anyone , you sure on that? Michael Nunn wanted a rematch from James but couldn't get him to go around again. Sparred together about 10 years after the KO, had to stop the sparring as Michael sat him on his backside in the first round. James was very good if you played into his trap. Great great career but if he could control himself he may have been in the top 10 ever.

Big Toney fan. Relaxed poised, indestructible immaculate defense and timing. Lazy though and it cost him. He's not the best ever mw of course not but he was very good and he should be required viewing for young fighters everywhere.

 

Or Ralph Tiger Jones? To put things in perspective.

James toney is without a doubt one of the greatest forces h2h at 160. The haters are boring and repetitive like hell with the tiberi fight using it against toney 100times.
harry greb lost against nobodies and got knocked out by a bum in 2 rounds, Tyson lost against douglas by ko, foreman lost against jimmy young, lewis lost by ko against rahman, liston lost against marty marshal, joe walcot lost against a bum like abe simon by ko etc etc all this is worse than winning a polemic decision.

It's a claim by Nunn -


Michael Nunn wanted a rematch. James Toney said no.

But, the two primary combatants in the 1991 Rumble on the Riverbank actually did square off in the ring one more time. And they also ultimately became good friends.

At least that’s how Nunn tells it in an e-mail from his current residence at Hazleton Federal Correctional Institution in Bruceton Mills, W.V.


About 10 years after Toney took Nunn’s world middleweight championship by knocking him out in his hometown, both men were working out at the Billy Blanks World Training Center in Sherman Oaks, Calif.

Nunn had just finished a workout and he learned that Toney’s scheduled sparring partner had failed to show up.



“They figured since me and James were at the same gym they could put us in the ring,’’ Nunn wrote. “Remember, I had already worked out, but I said ‘Heck yeah, let’s make it happen.’ After a lot of talking, we finally got in the ring to box a few rounds.





“They had to stop the sparring event after about three or four punches were thrown. I ended up knocking James Toney to his knees in the first punch that I threw. It was crazy. They stopped the session after (he) was not able to get back up …

“I must have had a flashback from our bout.’’

Nunn said he and Toney then went out and had dinner together.

“We are the best of friends,’’ Nunn added. “We have had some great times together. A good man.’’
