By Allan Fox: Former IBF/WBA/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev (30-1-1, 26 KOs) is talking about potentially adding a Russian coach to his training team to get him ready for his rematch against Andre Ward (31-0, 15 Kos) in 2017. Kovalev is reportedly interested in adding former Russian Olympic coach Nikolai Khromov to his […] The post Kovalev could add Russian coach for Ward rematch appeared first on Boxing News 24.
Kovalev's old coach from his hometown looked hardcore if you watched the HBO my fight video. He had a nasty scar on his face and looked like some sort of Russian mob associate.
Eastern Europe is tougher than USA. The game GTA IV was a very realistic portrayal of what happens when a Slavic man comes to USA.
Exactly. There are no handouts in Russia, you have to fend for yourself. Like you said Ward wouldn't last a day in such an environment. Only the strongest survive If his parents who were drug addicts tried any of their filthy stunts there they'd be dead within a week and we wouldn't be talking about any Andre Ward. I'm glad Kovalev is going back to a Russian Trainer, Jackson's heart didn't seem to be in it and seemed to be intimaded by Virgil Hunter. I'd love to see Hunter try his gangster street ruffian act against Nikolai Khromov and see if his throat isn't slit within a second.
Kovalev recently said in russian that american trainers are overrated. Kovalev might have won the fight 114-113 but nothing wider than that, despite a massive early lead. JDJ needed to tell kovalev to step it up last half and I think he really let kovalev down. I think in rounds like 7,8,9, and 11 kovalev didn't even try to win the rounds
I would have picked ward by decision in a rematch, but with Kovalev a new trainer likely much better conditioning for the rematch I'm not sure. Kovalev might have his number. and I thought Ward won the first fight 114-113 but could see it the other way. I think Kovalev gave away at least 4 of the last 6 when he didnt have to.
JDJ is too laid back, he doesn't have the killer instinct necessary to help make Kovalev step up a gear when needed. Emmanuel Stewart and Teddy Atlas have that fire in knowing when to turn up heat in the kitchen, so to speak
