I hope Ward employs much different tactics if and when they fight again. I believe their rematch has the potential to be an amazing, exciting encounter. But in spite of all the potential, it's still Ward that has to scrap the bullsh*technique and re-invent himself to achieve much greater heights.
Kovalev won the fight and it wasn't even close, I agreed with Harold Lederman, 116-111, actually, I had Kovalev winning almost every round, because Kovalev fought, landed the damaging punches, Ward only held on, tried to head butt Kovalev, grabbed Kovalev's leg, Ward's referee should have enforced the rules, should have taken away points from SOB, but SOB knew the fix was in as long as he could be standing at the end.....................very difficult to give SOB any round really.............
I think he damaged his right hand by landing his punch like that. Later on in the fight he stopped throwing his right as often.
There wasn't a distinct size and reach advantage. Kovalev has like, a one inch reach advantage which is pretty much nothing. They are also the same height. Kovalev's style makes his reach seem longer than it actually is. There was a lot of holding and attempted headbutts. Kovalev holding Ward's head down was illegal, but it was done to prevent Ward from headbutting him. Watch Kessler vs Ward and then pay attention to how Ward comes in vs Kovalev. It's the same thing. They are intentional and he has done it before. They are videos showing this in particular. This was not a clean fight at all. Tons of holding, low blows, attempted headbutts, rabbit punches, punches to the kidney... every single round of this fight was ripe with fouls.
So what if he employs donkey tactics again? This is the pros. If you don't like it, just watch AIBA's. Ward's game has elements of old school that are lost today and he's been able to mesh it in with his style to dominate this era. He had an even fight with a guy who's big for his weight class & literally a killer in the ring. Ward would do well to go to the body even more and 'run' around the ring a little more, too. Make it a stinkfest if needs be to win. Ward spent more time than he needed to in mid-range where Kovalev likes it most. Ward gave people an entertaining first fight, now make this one boring and just win it. I give a slight edge to Ward in the rematch.
I've heard a few guys come up with this one blaming Kovalev for the headlocks. Let me tune you in on the rules of boxing. Ward continually ducked under the jab and stuck his big head under Kovalev's left armpit and the same time holding him with his left arm. He is the instigator of the clinch and he is the one holding. It is illegal to defend yourself by not presenting your head as a target and putting it a position where it is impossible to be hit. Where is Kovs left arm supposed to go with Wards head down around his left waist? Ward has already breached the rules and I've even heard dudes saying Kov should have lost pts for the 'headlocks'. Bryd who I consider to be a good ref failed big time in this fight for not acting against Ward in this serious breach of the rules. He should have issued a couple of warnings the taken pts if he continued with this tactic. I got a lot of respect for Byrd as a ref but even the best of them have an off night. I also hear a lot of guys praising Ward for the great inside work especially with the body work but don't realize that anything landed with one hand whilst holding with the other does not count as a scoring punch in boxing. Ward did land some nice body shots from range but almost everything landed in close by either of them did not count. I haven't had much to say about this fight until now because I have been waiting for the more knowledgeable guys here to straighten out the wanna be experts on what went down in this fight but I haven't seen much of it coming.
Foh. You saw that Kov was clearly the bigger man. And the attempted fouls that you're talking about shows how biased you are alt. Ward didn't try to butt him. He tried to get inside. And who were these attempted fouls committed by? Let me guess, Ward huh cry baby. Foh with this lame ass troll post. Lmao...
Another ****ing alt blaming Ward for trying to get inside. You ****en cry babies kill me. Kov wanted no parts of fighting on the inside and when Ward got close, their were times that he grabbed Ward in a headlock the minute Ward did get inside. He got booed for that **** too. It didn't cost him a point, but the fans let him know that we don't want to see that ****.
