Great post. Lewis beats Buster 9 times out 10. Your comments about Lennox are most accurate. He gets lambasted for those 2 knockouts . Truth is he was better than EVERYONE he faced. Is there ANY HW of modern times who can say that ? Foreman for example attracts far less criticism, yet looked dreadful x 3 at his peak. ( Ali/Lyle/Young) This thing about Lennox being 'chinny' is bunkum. Douglas was a fine fighter that night in Tokyo. I just cannot see he beats Lennox.
But by definition of the question 'Memphis' Lewis was at his most focussed. Therefore overconfidence or complacency doesnt come into this equation. A focussed Lewis always looked like an ATG.
That version of Douglas was great. I watched that fight again recently and focused more on what he did, and when you examine it the man was a beast in that form, the combinations he threw were brutal, he was in there to wipe Tyson out. On top of that he had fluid movement a great ring generalship. Tyson was in for it that night, I believe he was not prepared to face the monster that Douglas was that night, how could he be, how could he expect meeting the greatest challenge of his career after seeing those odds? But please note what I say here, EVEN A PREPARED TYSON WAS IN TROUBLE. Buster had it all that night. Against Lewis I think he would have the better skills and movement, he was faster with the combinations. His only problem would be catching a hard right or uppercut from Lewis but if he controlled the distance he might not need to. If Lennox has him hurt he finishes him but I lean towards Douglas getting a points win, just outBoxing Lewis. I also think Douglas would be more active, Lennox seemed winded a lot in those later fights but had enough firepower to keep his opponent at a distance. Chin wise Lewis could take more than some people seem to think, I don't think he would get taken out but would look a mess afterwards.
I am a little bis shocked that so many people are picking Douglas. I think that even if he clowned Lewis in the early rounds, Lewis would manage to turn it into a war at some point, and that is a game that Lewis would win.
I agree with all that but I do believe Lewis catches up with him late and gets the stoppage. Nobody can realistically picture Douglas doing to Lewis what he did to Tyson no matter how great he performed in Tokyo that night.
Right until you realize he wouldn't. Mike Tyson was a 5'10 guy who couldn't handle a jab. Mike Tyson was a coward who couldn't handle somebody punching him back. Foreman, Bowe, Lewis in his prime, Tua, Holyfield, and so many others would of knocked out Douglas no matter what he did. His style worked against Tyson, that doesn't mean it would against different styles.
