“I think people everywhere have said that the winner of this fight (with Margarito) will be the best welterweight champion. I don’t have to call for Floyd Mayweather. He has to know what he has to do,” Cotto said. “I’m here to face all of the big names in boxing. If Floyd Mayweather doesn’t want to face me, it doesn’t matter to me. I have to continue with my career.”

“I faced a guy his size when I was at 140, Kelson Pinto. I’m pretty comfortable with my height; I don’t need any more inches to handle Margarito. When you have two guys that like to fight, put pressure on their opponents, you have a battle.”

A little more of the same, the guy is a rock and he won't budge an inch!

Cotto is the true 147lb Champion. He is a once in a life time talent. He's sort of a Latin version of a Marvin "Marvelous" Hagler...

Cotto saying that this fight is going to be a battle doesn't fair to well for him ... if he goes in there with the mentality that he's going to take Margarito out ... then he's going to get knocked out !!

Cotto isn't going to unify ... he's defending his title against Margarito ... Margarito is looking to vacate his title in order to fight Cotto.

He's not going to further unify **** ... Cotto is an elitist ...

Cotto never goes into a fight with that mentality. He will outclass, confuse and implode Margarito... Margo will lose and he, for once, will have to accept defeat, as it will be so clear that his Mexican "bad loser" cliché phrase: “I think I won, I was robbed”, won’t even come out of his mouth.

147lbs is Cotto's division once he takes care of Margarito. Floyd doesn't want to take part of anything at 147lbs, therefore Cotto will run the show. Line everyone up because Cotto will care less if Floyd isn't interested. Cotto keeps fighting and will unify 147lbs.

Floyd is a champion in 2 weight classes ... he's the emetrius champion by the WBC at 154 ... given that if he ever wanted to come up and campaign at 154 that he would be in good standing and will be granted an immediate championship bout sanctioned by WBC.

Cotto IS in a class by himself. He needs a little more experience to be the absolute "best" in his class IMO.........

What is he suppose to do? He is not going to do the "mayweather" and duck Margorito. He is going to fight the best at 147, belt or no belt.

Either way this will soon leave him unifying the division.

I don't like the sound of that.

Unlike Roger's interview, this makes me question whether the fight will happen or not.

Floyd's the best fighter in the world, period; even if every Tom, Dick and Harry calls Cotto the best welterweight in the world. I think Cotto KNOW what HE has to do, but doesn't neccessarily want to, me thinks.

Go ahead and let everyone know that he really was afraid to fight Cotto and all the other top welterweights

I just hope he doesn't duck Kirkland when he makes it to World Champ status.

He's right too. If he beats Margarito, he doesn't need Mayweather. Cotto will be THE man at 147. No exceptions.

If Cotto beats Margarito (and that's not a given), it's going to be awfully awkward around the Mayweather camp. As it stands, Floyd is hiding behind the thinnest of premises: that Cotto has yet to earn the right to fight him, or prove that the fight would draw enough dollars.

Considering Cotto's recent record, his consistent and dramatic improvement in the ring and his enormous, built-in fan base from Puerto Rico and amongst fans of exciting fights -- Floyd's gonna have to fight him or stand in embarassement.

it's a tough situation for floyd no matter who wins in july. That was his argument for not fighting Margo as well, "Margarito? who's Margarito?" said Floyd. So whoever wins Margo/Cotto will certainly be recognized as the welter Floyd should fight as long as he is active and calling himself the best.
