Sometimes we forget what a legend this guy was

Some people play the wanker for commercial reasons. He just is a deluded wanker and so is his son.

Had some good fights but had more shocking defences and hometown decisions. Not a patch on the likes of Collins.

 

Had a good career and done a lot for the sport in this country. Can still make me laugh but his egotistical delusions are not quite so amusing now that they're getting in the way of his son's career and robbing the fans of top fights.

 

I d say to people when your talking about eubank to go back and watch some of his fights against benn etc as a reminder. The level of skill in them grit determination is something to behold. I mind when we were comparing skill levels on here with eubank v benn and froch v groves going back and actually watching the benn eubank one. Its like night and day and groves froch one was a good fight.

Jones. Toney etc were a bridge too far but we re not exactly talking about regular boxers here. The level in terms of skill really was that much better back then. Changed up nowadays with a lot of it being about sport science so hard to compare them head to head etc but the skill level was tremendous. Eubank was top class.

 

Just because Eubank was a good fighter doesn't mean people have to like him personally.

 

Yes i saw that, it was during the gloves are off the Super middleweights, with RJJ JC Ritchie woodhall and steve collins.

A legend in his own mind no doubt.

 

Eubank doesnt do himself any favours but what people fail to realise is a lot of the guys he beat even a lot of the guys that were running about with 5 or 6 losses back then would still be able to compete no problem with todays top ten imo. There wasnt many mugs back then most of the guys could really fight.

 

Don't know why you've included Wharton on that list.

Wharton's the best on it ,but who did he beat ?Nardiello who'd been stopped 4 times?

 

The eye test plus his spirited showings in his losses against top drawer opposite suggest he wouldn't of disgraced himself with anyone had he been given the opportunities to fight more world class opponents.

 

I think prime Eubank beats all three.

Collins got him towards the end, Calzaghe also profited of the name.

Could have finished Carl Thompson but chose not to.

He was 29 when he fought Collins, 31 against Calzaghe, 32 against Thompson. That's when a fighter should be in his prime.

I'd excuse his defeats to Thompson as he stepped up in weight and Thompson was just too big and powerful for him.

Eubank was a show man, a real entertainer, quality to watch...but he wasn't a world class fighter. He was crafty in avoiding fighters that would wreck him. Now he's doing the same for his son.

 

He let his own demons get the better of him towards the end of his career and seemed to loose interest. He should have stopped Thompson in the first fight (and Collins) and was ahead against him in the second before the stoppage. Calzaghe fight was at short notice. I think Eubank is his own worst critic and plays on his modesty, in his prime was a fearsome beast. Chin, heart and punch were world class.
