How do you judge who is number 1(real champion) in any division?

Some people think Fury is number 1, because he beat the man, and that will not change until Fury is beat.
Some people think Wilder is number 1, because he has the prestigious WBC belt, that Tyson and Ali held.
Some people think Wilder is number 1, because he has defended his belt the most.
Some people think Joshua is number 1, because he beats low ranked fighters with such ease.
Some people think Wladimir is number 1, because Fury has retired, and Wladimir has the best resume of any current active fighter.
Some people think Fury is number 1, because he still holds the ring magazine belt.
Some people think the winner of Wldimir vs Joshua is number one because they will hold the most belts.
Some people think Parker is number 1, because the WBO rank him as such.
    What do you think?

I don't think there is any true formula, just simply a consensus. For example I would say Kovalev and Golovkin are clearly the #1 in their divisions, but some people will say Ward because he "beat" Kovalev and some will say Canelo because he is the "lineal" champion.

Heavyweight is a mess right now. Fury is clearly the #1, but considering he is retired and not active, I think that title goes to Wlad, followed by Wilder then Joshua. Wlad has 1 loss in the last 10 years? Wilder has a great record but has fought literally nobody. Joshua is up and coming and still building his resume.

If there is no fight between them then probably resume. If resume is too close to call then the eye test and circumstances of victories.

The Ward Kovalev situation is tricky. It's possible to have Ward winning without being biased or paid off, but he BARELY nicked it. On the flip side, you can make a very good case for Kovalev winning AND he has the better resume at light heavy. Pick your poison I guess.

Well, this is clearly the correct one. Fury is still the undefeated lineal champion. The absolute definition of a 'lineal' champion as well.

Well if you mean heavyweight division ... till theese greedy *******s don't start to fight between each other you can't tell who is the best... The winner of Joshua - Klitschko could call himself the best with a reason!

Being undefeated isn't the definition of a lineal champion. He beat the Man, and he's the Lineal Champ as it stands. The post said he's #1 because he beat the Man, which is the definition of a Lineal Champ, not that he's undefeated.

But he hasn't fought since he beat Wlad. That was in 2015. It's 2017 and we don't know when his next fight will be. I was disapointed that his rematch with Wlad didn't happen, and now I don't know what to think about his career or the HW Lineal Title. He's still the Lineal Champ but his Lineal Title could be vacated if he does not continue his career. If he stays semi-retired or whatever he is now, then at some point they may want to re-establish a lineage. He should have every opportunity to defend it, but he's got to get into a ring to do that. I'm beginning to think that Fury Wlad 2 may not happen. I think it would have been interesting to see how Wlad would ahve fought the rematch, and we may lose being able to see that if Wlad loses to AJ. I mean lets face it Wlad Could retire if he loses badly to AJ before Fury returns to the ring.

Honestly, I don't really care that much any more.

I just go with whatever TBRB says.

I'm tired of investing my time in a sport that consistently fails to deliver. So now i let them do the donkey work and I just follow what they say.

so he is still number one? in spite of faking injuries/illness to avoid his rematch? in spite of being suspended/retired? is he going to be number one infinitely?

When the Joshua/Klitschko winner beats Wilder, or Parker, that will be the time Fury is no longer number one. Unless Fury comes back during that time.

For HW it is open. I think Joshua is the best out of those listed, but that isn't proven yet. Lots of things have to happen in that division.
For CW my pick is Usyk for his win over Glowacki and his boxing ability.
I don't think Ward legitimately won over Kovalev and all 3 judges given the 10th round to Ward and one judge only giving 1 round past the 6th to Kovalev (and not the 10th; this is also important because one is the most he could give him without it being a draw and he did it in the 12th) cemented it for me. Because of this I have Kov being the best at LHW
168- DeGale. Could be Ramirez, but he needs bigger matches. I think his best win is over Abraham right now which..isn't enough for me to call him the best in a division.
    160- Obviously Golovkin
154- Open. I'm not big on Lara, Jermall Charlo moved up and arguably lost to Trout, Canelo moved up, Andrade doesn't have a belt so I don't really want to include him, Hurd was getting outboxed by Harrison for a lot of their fight. Right now I have to go with Lara, but I think Andrade is probably the best guy there.
147- Open. Brook beat Porter much better than Thurman did, but Brook still has to get past Spence which isn't a given and we don't know how he look after the Golovkin fight. Garcia-Thurman is a very important fight, and then if Spence beats Brook it is still just one big win and other matches have to happen to tell the full picture. We also have Pacquiao there who arguably is still the best guy.
    140- Crawford
135-Open. Going with Mikey Garcia personally but he isn't very active in general which annoys me. No problem with anyone that wants to consider someone else.
    130- Lomachenko
126-Open. LSC is 1-1 with Frampton. Winner of the trilogy is who I consider the best.
    122- Rigo
118- Don't follow the division closely enough, sadly.
115- Gonzalez. Inoue may be the #2, but a few matches need to happen there. Also, unrelated but was Cuadras even tested when he fought Roman? That bacne is a red flag... Also, why haven't Cuadras and Wangek (sp?) had a rematch?! Another thing, I am so excited for Wang vs Roman. God March is so stacked...

    Not familiar with the rest

Really it's all opinion. To any degree whatsoever. It doesn't even take a reasonable opinion to be better than the sanctioning bodies, sometimes. So. Yeah.

I just weigh up as many factors as i can. Usually we have about 2 or 3 serious contenders for the best in the division so as well as gut feeling i try to look at who these people have beaten and how they have beaten cuz plenty of times they will of all fought the same opposition, i know styles make fights but its not like nothing can be learnt from shared opponents. Play a bit of top trumps with their attributes.

Its not fool proof and clearly the best way would be to get these guys to fight each other but we dont get that so much these days, alot of them seem more interested in protecting the belt they have and making as much money off that as they can.

I don't really know how to even answer this tbh. I can make my own personal judgements on who the top dog in each division is based on factors like resume, the eye test etc. But even then I can't really call them the "real" champion even in my mind. Not with so many belts and with so many fights still to happen.
There are a few divisions with what is probably a consensus number 1 (eg Loma at 130, Crawford at 140), but how are you going to decide who the "real" champion is at Heavyweight or Welterweight? In one division you have an unbeaten lineal champ who looks like he is eating and snorting himself into permanent retirement and a bunch of ABC champions yet to meet each other, and in the other you have a legend on a retirement tour and two fights happening soon between the other best four guys. I guess it's fun to talk about though, which is why we are all here right?
