Closest boxer we have to Roy Jones Jr.?

No one mentioned in the thread comes close.

Also Roy Jones didn't "get by on athleticism alone". Roy had a custom skillset that was as technical and detailed or more than most boxer's styles. It's just that it took more athleticism to pull off. Yall make it sound like he was trying to learn how to box a normal way and couldn't do it. He was always trying to use a completely different style of boxing than what we are used to seeing. At around 32 or 33 the tools he used weren't as sharp and a 35 they became to dull to pull off his style at world class level.

 

Yeah I think the fact that someone his size was that fast is what makes it impresive. You have to look to lower weight classes normally to find that kind of speed.

I don't think you can find a lot of boxers faster than Jones at any weightclass.

 

Roy was 50 fights into his career and at the tail end of his prime before his chin showed
any signs of weakness, and to compare Wilder's boxing "skillset" to Roy's is laughable.

Roy had an excellent jab, right cross, good stationary defense when he chose to use it.
That's a myth that Roy didn't have great conventional skills.

 

Yeah but when you do it's usually someone 40 lbs lighter. Like Gary Russell Jr or something.

Nothing compares to what he once was to be honest.

His style was unique. Some people talks about Loma but Loma technique is way better. Jones was pure athlecism. Loma's way to create angles to throw a punch is more comparable to Manny Pacquiao IMO.

 

There is no one today who lives in the matrix like RJJ did in his prime.

 

Exactly! Jones was the untouchable, unstoppable, best fighter on the planet from 93' too 04' and consensus #1 P4P by 94' already knocking off Hopkins & Toney. The only flaw in his skillset was never learning proper defense, always relying on his athleticism and that check hook to avoid danger. But seriously from the time he turned pro in 89' until he went up to HW, then dropped back down to defend the LHW title against a fighter like Tarver which he beat the first time after coming down but was stopped in the rematch in 04' there was no one better than Roy Jones Jr.
