That's quite true. But sometimes you have to invest money to get good fights in order to build up a fighter's profile. If Barrera is unhappy with his purse it might be a wise idea for Beterbiev/GYM to give him a little more to make the fight happen.
This is what happens when a bent promotor tries to pull a fast one over their fighter who is not fluent in English and contract law.
Well whoever pulls out will lose the IBF ranking, I doubt Barrera at 35 years of age wants to lose this chance.
A'' reporter(recherchiste) TVA'' has just said that Barrera never signed the contract .. He does not want to fight against Artur
You hit the nail on the head here. How unfortunate. Team Beterbiev are still training for a fight on that date and are now pushing to be seen as IBF's mandatory.
Health care in the US is expensive. $62000 would not have covered Barrera's medical bills. Beterbiev is a victim of his power and unpopularity.
These type of fights don't happen often because of the low pay. It's either get paid decent for a title shot or peanuts. Interesting.
Barrera got paid $450 000 for Ward fight. For Beterbiev fight it would be less than 100,000. Makes economic sense . http://www.boxingnews24.com/2017/02/beterbievs-promoter-wins-purse-bid-barrera-fight/
Barrera should get blasted for this move but as usual some are already making excuses for him and how can Beterbiev have no fan base in Canada? People everywhere turn up to see punchers. They support Adonis Stevenson and he brutalized underaged girls for years yet Beterbiev is too unpalatable for them?
I live in Quebec and I have never seen Beterbiev talk on TV. I don't think he even speaks French or English. It's hard to market a guy like that.
I agree 100% that something doesn't add up here, but I think it's because one of the players got their hand forced. I've seen Duva bungle enough (the Stevenson purse bid fiasco, also with GYM, for one) that I think GYM outmaneuvered her again. Yeah, Barrera was scheduled to make $62,750 (25% of the 251k winning bid), but Duva herself only bid $181,000. There's more money in that fight than either side was willing to put up. GYM didn't forget when Duva forced the purse bid on Kovalev-Stevenson when they were looking to negotiate and played the same card, only they didn't bail on it. So, they didn't bid much, and still outbid her by almost 40% because she didn't want the fight. The reason I pin it on Duva and not GYM? There's much more incentive for them to send Beterbiev down the IBF route (and Ward or potentially Kovalev) because it keeps the WBC path clean for Superpimp, and sends the higher risk fights to Beterbiev. All Barrera gets from going IBF is a high-risk eliminator that leads to a rematch nobody wants (Ward) or an in-house fight his promoter needs to save him for in case the Ward-Kovalev rematch falls through.
