    Morning from the UK lads,

I'm new to the forum and have boxed for about nearly 18 years now! I'm 25 and started when I was 8ish give or take. I didn't take up competitive boxing till I was 18 and I had one bout which got stopped end of first round, I took a standing 8 and then he just kept hitting my gloves and before I knew it the ref stopped it! My fault.

Anyway I've been out the game for a while and back into it since August last year, I'm training for a novice bout and I have a few questions about the build up and pre contest prep etc that I'm hoping you lads will be able to share your experience. I'll be fighting at under 75kgs and I'm about 5'10''.

    - I'm weighing 79.5kgs now, what's safe to lose the day before? How do you guys rehydrate after the weigh in? Also do you eat beforehand?

    - I constantly keep getting colds with a stuffy nose and blocked up etc whilst training, do you guys find this normal and do you get it? What do you do to combat it?

In general I feel fit and strong and confident about the bout. I'll likely box someone who has had 1 or 2 bouts.

    Thanks in advance guys!

In amateur you get weighed a few hours before you fight usually at the most so there is no real time to 'rehydrate'. It's just a case of being at your best weight, your most comfortable weight.

When your body is getting pushed to its limits with intense training catching colds is common. make sure your nutrition is on point and you get your rest days in when needed and you should be ok.

talk to your coach about what weight you need to be. club shows don't have to go by a weight category. at that weight you can have around 10lbs difference (i'm not positive how it is in the UK but it cant be too much different). there's no need to lose the fight on the scale (which is what lots of novice boxers do their first time out). don't try to lose 10lbs (4.5kg) the day before. that's ridiculous.
