It wouldn't have made a difference unless Tyson was focused and well trained. His eye might not have swelled as much, though, as I doubt Rooney would let them use a condom and cold water for the swelling. I think an enswell would have been in the corner. lol.
The stars just aligned that night. One fighters technical & emotional unravelling coincided with the others managing to put everything together for one great performance. Like most things in life everythings about whats between the ears. Tyson's life was unravelling, Douglas, in training camp was not confident, apparently kept muttering that he just hoped not to get KO'd early, then he loses his Mom & that seemed to change his outlook.
I think he definitely stands more chance of winning if he had a more stable, experienced crew. Like u said his eye wouldn't have been as bad. I know it's all if s and buts and what ever but tyson in January 1990 was been listed as a possible great. He then loses to a decent fighter and suddenly he was never that good anyway. But I believe if he d have kept the original team he'd have never have been in that position to lose. Yes it would have been a tough fight for him against Douglas but he would have been better prepared.
Rooney said in 2005 interview after Mike retirement, that if MIke performed like he did in first few rounds against Douglas, he would throw the towel if Mike not listening and doing what he's told .
That's just silly. He had his best night, and was very good, but a lot of heavyweights on their best nights would have beat him soundly. Don't diminish a legitimately great acheivement by going crazy on it.
Nope. I'm agreeing with you. I think BD rightly gets credit, but oftentimes too much. I understand what you've written.
