Shall we put to rest any notion of Ward-Golovkin being competitive?

    GGG is a terrific fighter. He hits hard, he's got good fundamentals, cuts the ring off well. He had a long streak of KOs against solid, but not great, opposition in the middleweight division.

    Last night he fought Danny Jacobs, his sternest test to date. He scraped by with a disputed decision. Jacobs made things hard for GGG because of these main factors: his movement, size, and hand speed.

    Danny Jacobs, who was considered too "chinny" to trouble GGG before the fight, was able to stand up to GGG's power.

    Danny Jacobs also is a cancer survivor who was KO'd by Dmitri Pirog. He was a good amateur, but did not make the USA olympic team. His best win as a pro is against Peter Quillin. His second best win is over ... I'm not sure -- Sergio Mora?

    The disparity between the talent and ability of Danny Jacobs and Andre Ward is large. The point does not need to be belabored.

    We have a measuring stick with GGG now and that stick is rather shorter than we might have hoped. The vaunted power a little less than we had imagined (he knocks out heavyweights in sparring!)

    There will be no appetite for a showdown with Ward from here on out, and any discussion of some great potential matchup between the two is sadly and comprehensively moot. It was a nice thought for awhile, but after last night we can all be content to put it to bed. It does rather redeem the good judgement of Loeffler and GGG's management to avoid that fight when it could have been made, however, and shows that he has an excellent team behind him, from a business standpoint.

    Ward is too big and too skilled. Fight should never have been mooted in the first place, it's just dumb casuals who want to see a fighter they hate lose. Similar to ******ed casuals who felt Mayweather should get in the ring with GGG.

    Ggg wouldn't have to show ward ANY respect due to no power lIke Jacob's has. Again, styles make fights, jacobs has as much power as ggg and way faster than both 35 yr old ggg and ward

    Ward has size on his size tho

    How is this comparable? Someone with Ward's weight at 168lbs but significantly more power, reach and a different style, gives Golovkin the hardest fight in his career.
    Ward can't fight in that style, so has to take or nullify Golovkin's punches in a completely different way.

    Styles make fights.

    It is one thing to say that Jacobs performance says little for Canelo's chances, which I partly agree with. But Ward? Jacobs is at best an OK boxer -- in fact, I've never really seen him box consistently. He barely had the discipline to keep it together in this fight and his corner was furious with him. Ward does that style, but much, much, better in every department and its not close. Moreover, Ward doesn't needlessly "stray from the gameplan" as Jacobs did. Which is one reason why Ward was an olympic gold medalist and Jacobs an also-ran on the USA team.

    Jacobs "boxed" Golovkin using movement, a serviceable but not great jab, occasional flurries, and some head and upper-body movement. Ward would do something similar -- but without getting caught by all the short jabs because Ward is universes better than Jacobs defensively. Whole oceans of class and boxing acumen separate Jacobs and Ward.

    This fight is not even interesting anymore.

    I think Ward would win in a competitive but clear way...8-4 type of fight.

    But one thing is for sur GGG wouldn't have to bother with Ward's punch power as he had to with Jacobs.

    Plus for everyone saying going 12 rounds with DJ proves that GGG doesn't belong in the ring with Ward then flip reverse that in the same way that Ward having to go 9 rounds with Paul Smith and 12rds with Brand and Rodriguez proves he doesn't just walk through GGG.

    Ward has no power and a shaky chin.

    You can't beat Golovkin if he doesn't respect your power. He'll just walk through you.

    Jacobs was a unique package of size, power, speed and movement. And even with his power, he still had to get on his bike to last the fight.

    Ward probably doesn't last the fight with Golovkin. GGG would not respect his power and that means he's going to be coming after him from round 1.

    This was always the problem for Ward in a fight with Golovkin -- lack of power and shaky chin.

    Jacobs is a puncher who was on a 12-fight T/KO streak coming in and who had 29 KO's in 32 fights or so. It's just not the same kind of match-up as GGG fighting Ward.

    The only way to know is if they fight. Like some above said. GGG would came straight at Ward because he doesn't have the power Jacobs has. He would fight more aggressively. I still think it's a close fight...

    I forgot this, too: Jacobs has 2 inches of reach over Ward. And he's several years younger.

    Again, not the same fight or match-up.

    Any Ward fan who thinks that the Jacobs fight showed that Ward would beat GGG is kidding themselves.

    Was never a fan of this fight. Ward is more skilled but also way bigger than GGG, he must outweigh him by like 20 lbs now. This always seemed like a fight people wanted to happen for the sake of seeing GGG lose because it never made sense for me.
