Calzaghe was offered a shot to fight Jones. I believe that JOnes is being abit kind in hopes that he can get a fight with Joe now. It was in an interveiw with Dibella in ring mag when he was running boxing for HBO when they asked him about Jones fighting some to the guy from Europe. I think that it should be noted that DiBella isnt a fan of Jones. However he stated that an offer was sent to Warren about fight Jones and Warren replied that the offer was for peanuts and Joe dont fight for peanuts. I believe that was in 1999 I will have to check and find that mag, and when I do I will post the article. It will be a couple of days since I will be away from home until tuesday. Joe only really ducked Johnson once because it was the same fight that was postponed a couple of times. Joe did also duck David Telesco, now I think that Joe would have won that fight, but he ducked him shamelessly. Warren told reporters that Joe would be fighting Telesco, but it was news to Telesco team who had never heard from Warren, once they did they said that they would take the fight, then Warren pulled the offer that was never made to them in the first place. It was rumoured that Joe was offered fights in Germany vs both Ottke and Dariusz M, and rejected both. I dont know that to be fact, we had a poster here some time back that posted an article in German, but when I translated it, it was all screwed up and didnt make any sence. so I have my doubts about that. To be fair to Joe there hasnt been alot of top level guys out there for him to fight, in fact other then the guys I listed here only a handful of guys would have tested Joe over the past 10 years. Tarver, Toney and Eastman and maybe Woods are the only other big fights that could have been made.
Yeah, fair enough. Just 'twice if I remember' seemed a bit vague. As for searching the net... yeah that's what i'm doing here.
It had been a while, so I couldn't recall the specifics. But good luck! May have a collective answer eventually.:thumbsup
Seriously though...better late than never? I mean, Johnson just held the concensus #1 LHW to a very close contest...and Calz is, by merit of accomplishment or not, the "man" at the weight. A fight now (or very soon, perhaps after disposing of rubbish like Pavlik) is not unreasonable. Answers some questions. Good style matchup. You can't say one is any more demonstrably shot than the other. Why is this not even on the radar?
My only guess would be not enough money in it compared to a super fight w/ a washed up American star? Joe might be looking to cash out before calling it quits.
$$$ (I agree with you. btw, I had the 'concensus #1 LHW' losing that very close contest. Had that actually happened we might have had a chance of this one being talked about)
Joe aint ducked ****:nono When's he supposed to fight Johnson at LHW when he's PROVING he's the SMW Champ? Is there any real beef wih Pavlik over Johnson? I hope not. Pavliks a Unified MW Champ and while I have all respect for Johnson? He doesnt merit a fight over Pavlik at this point. Even if he had been credited with beating Dawson. Wanna talk about ducking? See Floyd Mayweather Jr. Leave the real and PROVING CHAMPIONS ALONE:yep
I have to actually hear or see a pro fighter say he is afraid to take on another for me to call it ducking, otherwise fans who say this about certain fighters are just specualting for the reason that maybe they just don't like the fighter. There could be many reasons why certain fights aren't made and it doesn't mean that one is ducking the other. Just my take on it.
Before Johnson's 3rd fight with Woods, I remember hearing that Glenn was gonna fight Calzaghe... And he was actually gonna go to 168... I think there was a verbal agreement but nothing official... this was all before Clinton finally agreed to fight Glenn for a 3rd time... I dunno if he ducked him or not...
Mate you lost it as soon as you said calzaghe ducked ottke or even beyer give yourself an uppercut :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl
Not moving up is hardly ducking, otherwise we could say Bernard ducked a lot of fighters above middle when he was clearly set on making his mark at middlewt (and did!). And Hopkins backed out of a fight that had verbal agreement on every aspect with Joe in 2003. (Greed, not fear drove Bernard. He suddenly doubled his purse demand.)
We're looking at this with hindsight. Johnson would have been a good win for Joe knowing what Johnson went on to do. But frankly at the time Johnson wasnt anything special at all - his record at SMW was not impressive at all. It would have ranked below the Sheika win at the time. Had the fight been seen as a career defining fight at the time more effort would have been put into making it happen despite Joe's (very genuine) injuries and personal issues.
Joe has much bigger fish to fry, he wants to retire soon, so he does not have many choices. Dawson should give Johnson a rematch after Johnson beat him.
