yeah the "elevation to major" is a bit of a scabby backdoor way to win a title, only just behind the backdoorish "winning a vacant title", but its fair play bearing in mind that since then he has made several world level defences.

The WBA regular belt at that point wasn't the top title due to the introduction of the super distinction (and yes I'm aware that Sturm's elevation was itself a result of ducking Golovkin). It would be like counting the WBC Diamond belt as the full title or pretending Jacobs was a champion going into the Golovkin fight.

No. Martinez became lineal when he beat Kelly Pavlik. He didn't lose that distinction until the Cotto fight.

Well, GGG beat the best 147 lb fighter (meh), he beat the best 160 lb fighters (DJ, DL), he is on his way to fight the 2nd best 160 lb fighter in BJS and then potentially he has two fights against the biggest/best 154 lb fighters ( Canelo/Charlo).

I'd say those are excellent names. Too bad they come so late in his career.

If he beats Ward and Kovalev I'd place him above Hagler.

    Except he won't.

Well GGG hasn't lost or draw either. And Hagler was retired by 34. GGG presses on with more successful title defenses.

Lineal is nice, but its not GGG's fault Canelo and Martinez wanted no part of him!

6 years, 7 months, 10 days, and counting, is a long time to own a division. Particularly when there is no end in sight.

My reply was in regards to the opening post, which claimed, "Marvin Hagler was the undisputed middlweight champion for 6 years, 7 months and 10 days, Golovkin surpassed it yesterday".

That is factually incorrect, because GGG isn't undisputed.

I don't disagree with what you're saying about the lineal title - it's not GGG's fault that he can't land a fight with Canelo and that he couldn't land one with Sergio.

But my comment, in the context of the original post, is entirely accurate.

Hagler wasn't undisputed champ for 6 years and 7 months.

Hagler took the WBA and WBC belts from Minter in 1980 but he didn't get the IBF strap until 1983.

Therefore he was only undisputed champ for closer to 3 years.

Furthermore there was no WBO, WBA Super or Ring belts available during his reign.

GGG has most number of title defenses in a short period. If he ties BHop"s record of 20 and beat
Saunders, he wjll be a true middleweight updisputed champ.

The IBF strap wasn't born until 1983.
