RIP https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/31766...ide-the-ring-as-heartbroken-pals-pay-tribute/ A TEENAGE boxer collapsed and died as the referee raised the hand of his winning opponent. Ed Bilbey, 17, was rushed to hospital following the amateur bout but was pronounced dead on arrival shortly after 10.15pm on Friday night. He collapsed in the middle of the ring after a “competitive” three-round bout against fellow boxer Tyler Rivers. Rivers’ “devastated” coach Craig Perkins said the bout had not been a brutal one. He said: “This wasn’t a brutal fight, it was a competitive fight between two well-matched opponents. “He shook our coach’s hand and then they both went back to the centre of the ring for the decision. “Our lad was announced the winner and just as the referee held up his hand, Ed stumbled forward. “He was falling through the ropes while the referee was holding his hand. The boxing game is no joke. For all the ish that gets talked on these forums, these men are risking their lives in the ring. Show respect
Pretty sure he died to other health issues not because of the boxing. Either way, boxing is a very dangerous, tough sport and only those who have experienced it first hand can relate to that.
I hope his family his holding up the best they can... I wonder if he cut a large amount of weight before the match. I had a coach who tried getting me to cut 10 lbs in order to box in a lower division. It drains the hell out of you and I'm glad I didn't go through with it.
Rip. Hate to hear about this for anyone, but for a teenager to get killed from boxing is even more tragic
Damn shame. Taking shots to the head is a risky business. It certainly made me stupider rather than vice versa.
Was so young this sucks, can happen in contact sports. Like you said could be weight cutting or maybe his body was still developing.
Tragic. But surprised it doesn't happen more often. Concussive blows to the head can rupture a blood vessel in the brain.
Well what was the cause of death? There are many athletes that have undiagnosed preexisting heart conditions that can cause them to drop dead basically. This isn't necessarily a 'boxing' death.
the problem usually is boxers go hard in sparring and take massive bombs and then they might have a little bleeding in the brain and not know it, they dont take time off to heal and then they go into a fight and then get hit more and then they bleed more. in my opinion boxers and even pro's shouldnt spar that hard because by the time they fight they are already showing damage and age.
I had a head on collision with a interstate bridge my head cracked winshield , was not knocked out chin check, Got hit in the eye would a baseball bat swung by another 12yr old (dont know if that counts) fell off a bridge about 10ft high face first , got run over by a car age 9. I survived my child hood. This kid had other medical issues he did not know about. like basket ball players dieing on court only to find they have heart problems. healthy humans are pretty tough.
Yes there guys risk their lives every time they get in the ring. The think is, most of them barely get compensated or paid enough for the damage they induce on their bodies. Wish their was more money for the lower end of the boxing spectrum. Seems like all the money goes to the top 5%
Ultimately it is a business like any other, the big money goes to the attraction bouts and that will not change any time soon. There is very little trickle down effect. And it's more like all the money goes to the top 0.1%.
I know its a business but these guy actually get some sort of brain damage. When you hear that people fight Artur Beterbiev are getting $50,000 to get KOd, its all good when you watch the fight but how far does that money go after paying off training and promo fees?
I decided to cut 10 pounds before for a lower weight fight. I have to say I felt OK. Is it supposed to be very dangerous, and why?
