He's arguably not even world class, look at how he is throwing wild lefts from range and missing wildly in the opening rounds. He and his team just knew that Burns was limited so could take these liberties against him. He tries that against Crawford or even Broner he gets countered easily. His footwork on the backfoot was pretty messy too.

Definitely hasn't proven he is world class.

I understand he's not good against southpaws but that is his managers/trainers job to advise him to take a fight or not. The promoters job is to get him opportunities and it was a big opportunity on a big stage. Either way Edduevsaid ore fight he asked Ricky do you really want to fight a world level southpaw and he said yes make fight.

Hearn is a **** no doubt but he's gotten Burns chances that he'd probably never have gotten again after Crawford beat him.

As for Burns he's a British cinderalla man. Not great at any one thing but he's a multi wright world champion and should be very proud of what he's achieved.

I m in agreement with billy. As a fan of boxing thats fed up to the back teeth of seeing guys get hyped up the way they do nowadays. Ricky burns sold as a genuine three weight world champion. I can see it from both sides. As a fan you have no problem seeing him in with these guys. But looking at eddies matchmaking of him since he took over from frank its been car crash.

This is a guy he took over as a world champion. Who was easily selling out stadiums in glasgow. Seen as scotlands best fighter for years. Now seen trying to sneak out the ring against guys no ones ever heard of beat 120-108 at home. Confidence shot to bits. I just think its shocking matchmaking throwing burns in with guys no ones heard of that are actually good. Theres no real reason to do it with guys that have already made a name for themselves like ricky had. Its like eddies just taking a punt on it everytime. If your going to take a punt with guys like ricky its got to be against guys people have actually heard of.

Even the di rocco fight was a disaster. Everyone with two eyes could see the guy was useless. Theres no point buying ricky a title at this stage especially at a higher weight class...you then have to fight someone decent. He wasnt ready for that stage of his comeback anyway. Figuero fight...he had to move up in weight to fight him away from home. This is a newly ex world champion being treated like a gun for hire.

Its not rocket science. Rickys pretty tall. Get him in at his right weight with guys with a smaller reach than him and not a southpaw. Get him winning 4 or 5 of them back to back. Then take your punt preferably against someone people have heard of. Was just a few years ago they were talking about him as scotlands best ever fighter. Where is he now...getting beat 120-108 against a guy no ones heard of....at home.

That gonzales was class. No one had heard of him. Beltram was better than his record suggested. No one had heard of zlaticanan. He was very good. Massive mistake sticking him in with him so early on his comeback. Reliekh again no one had heard of him...he was decent. Figeuro away from home a new weight class. Again not enough people knew him either. Crawford was class and again unknown. Tbf i think that one was a mandatory. But its mental matchmaking especially when theres literally hundreds of guys around that are the opposite good records...not great fighters but would be half decent wins. The thing ricky needed after crawford. The problem is hearn tryed to hype him up ridiculously. Then people want him in with anyone. Its easy to see rickys not really at world level...if you stick him in at or near that level. Its just ends up embarrasing. Lets get fighters in that he can actually beat. Get the confidence up then see what comes up. Forget about trying to hand him belts. He doesnt even need belts to get decent named fighters anyway. His name was already built. I d also query how much hes actually making for these risky fights anyway.

A good promoter generally speaking but on many levels the Indongo was a mistake.

Ricky is a small super lightweight you didnt have to know if Indongo was any good or not, you only had to look at him, big, long reach, southpaw, tough as teak african.

What is worse is Eddie has allowed Indongo to unify the belts, and so now all those potentially great fights such as Burns v Crolla, Burns V Josh Taylor and Ohara Davies, Jack Caterall v the winners etc etc. None of these fights happen now.

Take nothing away from Burns, he's too small for world class super lightweights, at lightweight he bullied Kevin Mitchell, he would of bully Crolla also.

Since when has anyone with a belt automatically mean they are world class?

I don't understand how any of that is relevant to Saturday. Burns was the champion facing another champion.

    Isn't this what fans demand?
Call it bad matchmaking but if a unification fight isn't what any fighter strives for then might as well pack it in.

I thought burns v Crawford 2 would of been pointless if Burns won but could see why it may of happened simply because all the belts would of been on the linem

Fans are always moaning that Champs don't face each other. Should we only see unification fights if it's the right opponent?

Hearn gave Burns a chance to make history, this was a legacy fight that Burns came up short in, lot of respect for what you have done as a trainer Billy and you normally talk a lot of sense on here despite the grief you get from Solaris ect but I think you are wrong here.

Burns summed it up best hisself he lost against the better man, he had a chance and came up short no shame in that this is a tough game but to try put blame at Hearns door in this instance I think is just wrong he gave BUrns a platform to make history unfortunetly he came up against a better fighter on the night.

TBH Burns was offered Malanaggi for more money than Indongo but he chose the harder fight, so hats off to Burns he could have sat back and milked his belt in Glasgow against duds but he took the real fight. It was a gamble and it could have paid off, but Burns was ill equipped to deal with the southpaw style. Hearns has actually done a great job getting Burns back into the titles as most thought he was a spent force. Theres still plenty fights out there for him I would like to see a British super six @Superlightweight

I originally poster this in the ricky burns too one dimensional thread but imo it still works in this one just as well :thumbsup:

I'm sorry but that is one of the worst statements i have heard from a trainer lol, wasn't it billys job when he coached him for his world title fights to ensure he was prepared to fight southpaws? i can never remember ricky struggling with them as an amateur so maybe it is more to do with billys repetitive training in the gym?:thinking:

billy was peter harrison second in command for a lot of years and with what i have been told they both preach exactly the same regime 'left on left' this means that after punching they always want your left shoulder level with your opponents shoulder but against southpaws this makes you walk onto the left hand. go back and watch ricky since he started training with billy and you will see after he punches he automatically moves slightly to his right to get his left shoulder level with his opponents. have seen this when peter was the youth performance director for amateur boxing scotland and it stuck in my mind that it makes you very one dimensional. this is made even more apparent now that ricky isn't as confident and mentally strong as he was before the beltran fight when he got his jaw broken so instead of trying to grind results out like before he now goes into auto pilot and to what he did with billy everyday in the gym and that is left on left or moving around the ring with no real direction.:eusa_doh:

tony sims gets a lot of stick but imo he was a busted flush before he ever got there and although i don't really think he is a great coach but i just feel you could have gave ricky to adam booth, freddie roach or virgil hunter and they couldn't change rickys form.

at the end of the day ricky has been amazing for scotland and when he was with billy and being matched by frank he really achieved more than anyone thought after a couple early defeats but ince his move to matchroom i feel he has just been matched at the level we all believed he was at with frank and he has struggled. no shame in what he has done and he is the most successful scottish boxer ever although i would argue that ken buchanan is still the main man:thumbsup:

The fight was offered to Malignaggi but Malignaggi admitted he couldn't do the weight so it was a non starter.

I'd say ever since the creation of the belts over 99% of people who have held one have been generally regarded as top 30 fighters at the very least (which is world class) and considering this guy won his title on the road and is unbeaten, this is no exception.

The general consensus was that Indongo was a top 10 or top 5 rated boxer and also a world champion.

Thats where the problem lies for me though...getting ricky a belt against a no hoper just created a problem. Was equally as bad as getting guys across that can fight but no one had ever heard of. Talks of ricky in unification fights is ludicrous tbh. He was basically handed a belt against a guy that was hopeless.

Any chance hearn can properly rebuild him after a broken jaw injury. And a big defeat to crawford. Think it went broken jaw. Then crawford. Then zlaticanan in his comeback fight. That alone is a giant fu ck up.

If you look at rickys record i cant think of anyone whos been matched as badly. Its like eddies...who i think lost money on him taking him from fra ncks just using him to get his money back with no real thought on his progression etc.
