I understand Calzaghe "figure other fighters out" but don't you think it is possiblye that once he may not have an answer. Maybe Clazaghe think he has something figured out an get KO'd. You can figure someone out, but it doesn't mean you can beat them. I know that Shaquelle O'neal is going to dunk the ball over me, is there anything i can do about that. I figured out his gameplan. Means nothing. I am sure everyone else knew that Kelly was going to through straight combinations. And there is something to be said about someone who throws a good jab a few times to set up his right. Not many fighters do that any more. Pavlik uses a classic throwback style, not flashy, and it works.

I think it's pretty obvious Pavlik will beat slappy like a drum. Slappy has never seen anything like Pavlik, or felt anything like Kelly's power.

But I think while Pavlik will probably KO slappy there is also the strong possibility that Enzo runs into the ring to save his boy.

So technically that's a TKO not a KO.

Either way, an embarrassing end to what was essentially a fraudulent career for slappy.

Good post. Love the Shaq analogy, cause damn right, you know it's what he's gonna do, but who's gonna stop him?:yep

This thread has me arguing against Calzaghe when in reality he is one of my favorite fighters. We just happen to pit him against one that I happen like more in Pavlik. I still think JC is great. I almost wouldn't want to see them fight because I like em too much. But if it is gonna happen I gotta go Pavlik.

That is exactly the position I was in with Pavlik/Taylor. Esp. the first fight. I had always been a fan of JT, but started following Pav strong a couple years ago. I couldn't even go to work the Friday before the first fight, I was so tore up about it.

You are quite right, there is a fighter that could potentially beat him using only Plan A, but it's not Pavlik when he is at a stylistic disadvantage. It would be pretty naive to think walk forward, jab, right hand would beat a fighter like Calzaghe. Kessler did exactly the same thing, but instead of walking forward he boxed from range, and it was nothing like enough

For a fighter to win using only plan A they'd either have to be a level above (prime Roy Jones) or a stylistic nightmare. A crafty counterpuncher that can fight inside, that is defensively solid. Joe looks bad against those types.

You know, I don't know if he needs to be a counterpuncher, but he needs to do something to nullify Calzaghe slappy flurries. His punching power is definitely above Joe's, and Kessler's for that matter. He is so damned reserved, he always leaves he opposition stupidly dismissing and underestimating him (Calzaghe sounds like he sure is from the interviews on this subject). Still, the earlier he takes out Calzaghe, the better. It is very hard for me to believe a decision will favor Kelly.

I agree to a point. I was actually more impressed with Taylor that night than I was with Pavlik. I don't know when a fighter ever showed that much improvement from one fight to the very next. The only thing new from Kelly was that he showed us he can keep it together for 12 hard rounds. I had it scored 116-112, but I was holding my freakin' breath waiting for them to announce the winner.

You put a game plan together based on what an opponent has done in the past. Ole Joe going to do something new? Everything he has done in the past will be considered when putting together the 'game plan'. You know both sides will live with the films.
