Porter v Berto thoughts?

berto is plain ****. Porter is a nightmare to fight, but he could do himself alot of favours working on distancing and punch placement.

 

Nah, he was good at one point, and wasn't looked at as journeyman by anybody until now.

 

The division is weak, there's no top contender, it's him and Peterson, ideally they would fight each other but I gotta feeling they both will get a title shot.

 

Porter throws the best elbow in boxing. He caught Berto with several. His shoulder is pretty effective too. I kind felt Berto was mentally undone by Porter's tactics. It was an ugly fight.

 

It would have been a more entertaining and exciting fight if the ref hadn't been so timid. He was a major player in the way the fight was fought.

 

Lets be honest, this was a fight designed to make Porter look good and set up the Porter-Thurman rematch, which is fine, considering the closeness of the fight, and the excitement it generated.

 

My thoughts on the fight were that I was delighted to be the beneficiary of 2/1 odds on Porter getting the stoppage

The fight was a messy affair, which is typical of Porter fights and I agree with the previous comment about him smothering his own work. His aggressive, in-your-face style is working for him though and Porter isn't a walk in the park for anybody at welter.

Berto is set for life financially and could easily retire but maybe he just loves to box, in that case there are still plenty of up and comers who could use a Berto fight as an introduction to 147, maybe a good opponent for Crawford when he moves up.

Porter is Porter, rough and ready. I would like to see him fight Danny Garcia or Matthysse, that one would be a real war. I can't see him beating Thurman even though he ran him close the first time or the winner of Brook/Spence Jr. A fight between Crawford and himself would be intriguing although I fancy Bud to outclass him in that one also.

 

Go watch the replay then talk to me. Not every clash was his fault but the last one clearly was.

 

It was an ugly fight and Porter should be penalized for constant fouls. However Berto needs to learn how to fight on the inside. It has always been his weakness.

 

That last head butt was the one that finished Berto, such a dirty fight, never seen so many head butts............Porter is a wrestler, using his head and elbows..............he should have been warned about head butting, I would not blame any fighter for not fighting Porter simply because of his dirty fighting................too many headbutts..................

 

I just finished watching this. Porter forces his way in to lean against the opponent and throw bombs, leaving the opponent with no room to move there heads if they lower it. He also turns his whole body into his shots which makes head clashes even more likely to happen at that close a distance. He would have won that fight regardless, but that mauling style is just ugly and frustrating to watch.

Ref's in the future need to put a stop to his shenanigans, if an opponent leans towards the left or right side of the chest and is physically imposing there is next to no angle to throw a punch back except for a compact upper with very little pop, it's dirty as hell. Mean while he can throw to the body or the head. The only option is to clinch him.

I know this is used by other fighters, but for Porter it is his whole game. This is the type of boxing match that If I were a boxer I would purposely throw a massive elbow to the back of his head when he leans in and give him a stern warning that it'll be much worse if he keeps doing that crap.

 

No surprise with the result and I enjoyed the fight. Didn't expect Berto to be stopped to be honest but it shouldn't be shocking. Porter is good and is trouble for pretty much anyone but I don't think he'll ever get a win over a top tier fighter in the division

 

Like most of you have said, really ugly fight. Two takeaways for me:

1) I just don't see how Porters' boxing style (sloppy and wild most times) is marketable. Especially with all of the accidental headbutts. I don't blame him for using that approach because I do not think he can outbox Berto in a clean fight.

2) I really got the feeling that Berto just wanted one more fight to cash out and retire. During his post fight interview he kept mentioning "enjoying the fruits of his labor and hard work". He even mentioned it on his snapchat. Seems as if he wants to go ahead and hang them up. I don't blame him either. He just hasn't looked like the same fight since Mayweather. He really didn't look that sharp against Ortiz - It just so happen Ortiz got caught w/ a clean uppercut.

 

There needs to be some consensus on what is an 'accidental' headbutt, and what is an 'inevitable' headbutt due to the fighting style. The latter needs to be dealt with the same as if it was a deliberate headbutt.

I think Porter is a genuine guy who doesn't want to headbutt. But it's the same in any boxing match, hell the same in any sport, in that if one competitor is gaining an advantage by pushing the rules to the limits, and also by crossing the line and breaking the rules, then they will keep doing it until they are properly punished.

Porter isn't completely wildl, no matter how rough his style is. If he is getting points taken off and is staring at disqualification, then he would change something. It might take 5 or 10% away from his effectiveness, but it would make for a better fight. There needs to be real top quality reffing for his fights, and that's coming from someone who really likes the guy.

 

I think a guy like Vernon Forrest would have uppercutted Porter into the canvas.
