"the better opponents he fights, the worse he'll look."

i disagree. in some cases, yes,..fighters will look worse when they step it up. However, sometimes a fighter fights to the level of his competition and if he's fighting a bad opponent, he'll look bad, he fights a good opponent, he'll look good.

i am like that, when i fight not-so-good fighters, it brings out the worst in me but the better i fight, the better i look for some reason.

anyone else feel this way about this cliche? and are you the same way? the better the opponent, the better you perform?

I'm exactly the same way. I've boxed brilliantly against good fighters and looked lazy and **** against guys who are worse than me. When I've gone against guys who aren't good, I dropped to their level for some reason, and even if I tried to step the effort up, I still looked like ****.

The better opponents I have the better I do. I get all sloppy and wild when my opponent is crappy. I'd take a technical, skilled opponent over some wild swinging newbie any day.

I agree with what you guys have said, and I know a lot of guys who are the same. Fighting a **** opponent who's awkward and wild makes it hard to box and draws you into a really sloppy fight.

if i was in a fight (i havent had one yet :)) i would try my hardest against anyone, good or bad, because if you end up losing on points against a guy who's **** because you didnt try very hard and their work rate was alot higher than yours, your going to end up feeling like ****.

actually, fighting someone with no skills can make you look like an ass because you train to fight someone who knows how to fight and when you come up against someonne who is ****, then you are naturally not going to be able to be as pretty and as technical and stuff

If you are so easily affected by your opponent, then how will you fair if he tries pyschological warfare? Unless you force consistency out of yourself, inconsistency becomes a weakness that can be exploited.

rising to the level of their opponents incompetence has been the downfall of many fighters
