Are casual fans vital for growth of boxing?

Yes!! Hopefully most will learn the sport & be good contributers. Sadly we'll always have the immature trolls who have no interest in the sport but come here just to disrupt the forum. They're easy to figure out & ignore though

 

boxing is barely alive in the states with casuals. btw, 99% of all sports fans know squat about what they are talking about.

 

Iv a theory that without casuals there will be less money in boxing, there will also be less hype and less need to cater to the casuals with pointless wwe antics and hyped match ups. Boxing would regress in terms of money earned but the product would improve as boxers would have to fight the best to make the fans happy

Boxing has always had casuals, and yes it's important. If the casuals are involved then you know it's a big event and that's when you get new boxing fans that become true boxing fans. We all became boxing fans from watching boxing at the end of the day.

 

As long as money needs to be made casuals of any sport will pay to see it. How many times has a world championship soccer(futbol or whatever) been sold out by casual sport fans?
The Super Bowl is sold out in minutes by people who don't know one player on the teams.
Mayweather vs Pacquiao is the lead example of casual purchasing power at the gate and on PPV.

A sports greatest fan is a casual. Hardcore fans are the worst for any business. Why?

Has 2 million hardcore internet fans, only draws a "sold-out" crowd when his tickets are $25 dollars, can only get a million views when his fights are free. Ask about those PPV numbers doing 200,000 as a collective and people blame May/Pac and come up with really dumb excuses. Hardcore fans are not profitable fans because they know the BUSINESS, they know when a fight is a ruse and won't pay.

 

More casuals means more popularity of the sport which means more potential people who start boxing. Of course we need them.

Some casuals know more about the sport than the hardcores who post on forums. They also go to fights and buy tickets and PPVs.

We don't need them. They are a cancer on the sport. They are the reason why mediocre matchups are constantly put on pay per view, the promoters and networks have long since twigged that they can be made to believe that anything is a superfight with the right promotion. They are the reason why we've got fighters being paid obscene amounts like £15m for 3 months work including the training. They are the reason why promoters try and line their fighters up against one can after another. They are the reason fans are made to wait years for top matchups and the reason bull**** excuses like "letting the fight marinate" have become seen as acceptable.

I am deeply against the idea of pay per view boxing, I believe that if you pay your licensing fee it is daylight robbery to expect you to pay again to watch the events you have already paid for. However, when it first happened in the U.K. I could accept it, as Sky were putting on big U.K. Cards and then switching to the states for huge US ones which they had to pay for the rights to and which we would never have been able to see otherwise in the pre-YouTube days. But nowadays as opposed to doing it to cover costs they are doing it so they can offer the fighters huge sums of money to sign up with them and the purchases from the casuals are driving this. They are also clueless when it comes to holding a discussion about the sport.

Basically casuals should have been drowned at birth.

 

Getting tired of the whole thing about what people on here consider "casual" fans. I have been following boxing since 1970 and consider myself a big fan, but I also have other things I am interested in and don't feel the need to be on here 24/7 making meaningless post after meaningless post. I was thrilled by the fight yesterday and thought it was a great day for boxing, but I was also following my fantasy golfer to see how he was doing. Is that ok with you? Or am I a "casual" because I didn't devote my entire being to the fight. And frankly, I don't care if you need me or not. Some people need to get over themselves

 

I think You have to have them for the Sport to survive....I get a bit of a laugh out of them also...been watching Boxing for less than 20 Years and some of the Bull Sh!t they spew is Hilarious.!!!!

 

Well every single member here was a casual at some point of his life. You have to start from somewhere... Fights like the one yesterday could inspire casuals to be more interested. I always followed boxing as just a casual , like many other sports , but there was a huge hype before the Pulev Klitschko hype in my country, so I started to follow the heavyweight division. Then step by step if you have time , you can explore and explore ... Right now I am excited for so many fights and fighters. Maybe for 3 years there wasn't a single day where I didn't open the forum or the site. So of course boxing needs casuals.
