Wlad couldn't pull the trigger in his two biggest fights within that time period. There's a difference between can't pull the trigger and won't pull the trigger.

Hesitant , cautions , clinch reliant Wlad of that time would probably have been ironed out quicker than 11 rounds.

Vitali said this was the best Wlad ever fight and im inclined to agree with him.

 

That was german interview, he meant the fight was his best, not Wlad as a fighter. Because of heart, drama etc...

 

He also said that he had great movement and was looking great, he praised his performance, not only the fight.

I agree mid 30's Wlad is when he was at his peak due to a combination of physical gifts and Steward's wise counsel.

It'll be interesting see how Joshua develops as he ages. Can he improve his currently porous defence? How will his hand speed hold up as he enters his 30's? How will he deal with the unconventional styles of Fury and Wilder?

 

Please, Wlad was 41, out of the ring for 1.5 years.

He lost, speed, timing, velocity on his punches, stamina, and power.

In his youth, he was blazing fast, could throw more punches, was more accurate, ect...

When you are 41 you have to pace yourself.

Yeah, Wlad was dropped a few times by punchers. He always got up though. How many KO's losses would Lewis have it he fought to age 41 and had 68 total fights?

 

Sorry, but Wlad is the bigger man of the two, they have the same reach,Joshua is maybe 6'5 and should fight at 230; Wlad is a good 6'6 and should fight at 250 next time.240 too low and forget going the distance-take your chances and knock out the vulnerable Joshua. Or bust him up so much he doesn't recover- Joshua was a no show from mid round 5 to 9, but showed amazing recuperative powers going into the 10th.
I believe the 17 month layoff mostly affected Wlad's timing--primarily with the left hook because his
punishing jab found its mark repeatedly -- to set up the rocket right and blasted a bewildered Joshua into
uncontrollable hysteria and panic -he had no answer for that one-two. He could resort to spitting out his mouthpiece to give him time, but it won't work in the rematch.
I think I would like Wlad to rethink his position with Vitali and Banks and make a decision to go forward with the rematch. This time go for the kill and throw caution to the wind. Get him thinking early when things age-wise are pretty much even. Joshua has an average chin-like Wlad. Wlad was in great shape and, in today's world, 41/42 year olds are 10 years younger than even in Ali's reign-early 80's.
Unlike what 99 percent on this board think, Joshua had no answer for the jab and the rocket right hand.
Not only that, something else is going on with Joshua: he gets defenseless and loses confidence, stamina and
downright chokes when he gets hit with a good shot.
Wlad will land that big right hand again and that single punch had more power on it than any of the so-called power punches--including the all mighty- never to be forgotten --thanks to the media and the usual suspects on this forum-uppercut that didn't end the fight.

 

Wlad after Manny got him, was cautious, correct, but he still fired shots. He still worked the jab,
hooked off the jab, led with the hook threw the quick, powerful jab-cross, and moved well. He kept
his right hand glued to the side of his head to avoid counter hooks. It was almost impossible
to land in combination on him. He laid opponents, he physically grinded them down at the same time as he punished him with punches. That Wlad has been gone for a while. He was not in the ring Saturday. there's so many things that he did different. Vitali's quote was hyperbole, I'm convinced.

This Wlad just wasn't the same. I'll never believe otherwise. I'm shocked he was able
to even get semi-up for this fight. That's credit to his conditioning. *shrugs*

 

+1. To put it another way, would anybody really favor the Wlad that fought Joshua vs the one of a few years back with Manny? I don't see the rationale behind it. He was better physically and had better coaching (much, much better- I really don't rate Banks as a trainer while Manny was an ATG trainer that was perfect for Wlad.). People predicting the same outcome are essentially saying that a younger Wlad with Manny has no advantage over what we just saw. That youth and superior coaching have no impact.

No one has said that. You merely typed it out all by yourself...

 

Let's not forget that Wlad lost that fight by a whisker. Some refs woud have stopped it in the 6th.

Through a combination of Aj's quick reflexes and Wlad's slower punches he missed a lot of shots that AJ slipped that imho he would never have missed 30-35ish. It's really pretty obvious.

Joshua hasn't hit his prime yet, though. I believe he will become a lot more scary than he is now.

Correct, but I remember in the late 70's/80's pretty much every world class fighter was done at around age 32 or so, just could no longer compete. A combination of the depth and talent of boxing back then and how much fitness and supplements have evolved since then.
