I want to say Lewis or Vitali, but neither was very good on the inside. There answer to that a monstrous uppercut or clinching. I still think a pre-Tokyo Tyson bests Lewis. The most complete heavyweight Imo was Joe Louis. A prime Larry Holmes was a mean, aggro version of Ali. The reasons I wouldn't want to pick Lewis for the reason that he got Tyson and Holyfield on the slide, has a susceptible chin, and the Klits had some very weak competition, that's why the heavyweight division was one of the weakest since Wlad's reign began. I have to go with a prime Louis or Foreman.
2 fighters not getting enough love in this conversation ... Liston is top 5. For those who don't think both Ali fights were fixed I'll never win the argument so I won't try. (He was also very old at the time of those fights as his listed age was fake) Foreman is top 5. Foreman also lost to Ali but would have been the favorite in a rematch. I'm not sure there is anyone I would have favored over prime foreman. Sure he would have lost some matchups - but just feel he would be favored in all of them.
I can live with Lennox and Vitali as the H2H king, maaaaaybe Wladimir (and I suppose Joshua if you really want to stick your neck out) but Riddick 'Big Daddy' Bowe was a monster on his day and I favour him over anyone or at worst around 50/50 on it. Honorable mention to Larry Holmes who is a H2H beast in his own right but gets outsized/outgunned by the biggest, best-est and baddest.
. Yes, Bowe certainly deserves a place on the poll. I would pick Lewis or Vitali. Lewis may be the safer pick, but styles do make fights, so it depends on the opponent. Honourable mentions to: Wlad, Bowe, Ali, Foreman, Holmes, Tyson Once Joshua is the finished product he may well end up there too.
I went for Wlad. Has the size, speed, power and experience combination nobody else comes close too. Wlad Vitali Fury Lewis Joshua
joffjoff. Nice to see some love for Bowe. H2H he dominates most greats. Lewis Bowe Vitali my top 3, in no order
Sorry, but I just find these HW H2H threads very frustrating. In a division with no weight limit it's pretty damned meaningless. Back in Ali's day there would have been 6ft 6ins, 240llbs athletes but they didn't become boxers because what was considered the ideal size for HWs back then was shorter and lighter than today's blueprint, with the odd exception obviously. But we're talking trends here. Moving to today, Ali would either be a CW or would have bulked up using modern strength and condition techniques, legit or otherwise. So he would either be in an entirely different weight class or an entirely more formidable physical specimen. I voted Lennox.
