I fear for his life let alone boxing career. Weight gain + drug abuse = very hard on heart. Now he's going to push his heart doing cardio to lose weight. Seems like a recipe for disaster.
Fury is a heavy weight. not a Duran, Hatton or Morales. it doesn't do any fighter good to balloon up in weight. However, he has gained a massive amount of weight and been under the influence of what....ranges from wild possums to ...who knows what. Don't think he will be the same. sure, could be wrong but I doubt it. Look at Roy Jones...gained weight and fought at heavyweight...and then returned....not so good. Just one example...but his weight gain was calculated and not caused by goofing off...still had a bad effect. To reach the right weight, skill set etc. to be the most effective and gain access to the upper tiers of any level of combative sports takes years. to then mess with it and try to undo it is very unwise. doubt if he will be able to return with the same level of effectiveness as before.
I don't think the weight loss (if he loses) will be the problem. There's no scientific reason to say so. Nor the alleged substance abuse (he did coke a few times, so what). The main obstacle is whether he can get his fitness and sharpness back without getting injured. People who get out of shape have a tendency to push themselves too hard and too quickly when they want to get back in shape.
Exactly. It might have appeared a dull fight but Fury did a lot in that fight to get the result he did. It was an exceptional performance that for some reason still doesn't get the credit it deserves
Any pro athlete who lives a life of recreational drugs, alcohol abuse and extreme weight gain is going to see an effect on the physical performance. That's just the reality. It may not even be huge amounts but at the top level of sport those tiny minor drops in performance targets all add up.
Anyone who can rate Fury's performance in Germany as anything other than fantastic "don't know **** about boxing" as the Mayweathers say. He was amazing.
Realistically, most of them drink or do recreational drugs now and then though. They don't all publicize it obviously. Michael Phelps was hitting the bong and winning so many gold medals he was looking like Mr.T
Yes but I have no doubt he was always in shape. Take someone like Ronaldinho who for 2 years was the best soccer player on the planet. He then started to hit the clubs, mess with his diet and started to put on extra weight. Within 18 months that player was finished at the top level. The drop in performance levels was so quick. Ricky Hatton would never of had to retire so early if he looked after his body.
Yeah. I think Tyson Fury has this one last chance really. He's only 28 but he's aged himself a bit. If he's serious about getting in shape again and does it right I think he can come back, perhaps as good as he was or better. But it really is his last chance. Maybe it's too late already but I'm not writing him off yet.
It's easier to say he won't be the same at this point, when the evidence is a few videos of him in bed saying he is coming back. There is no solid evidence this early. The thing I wonder about is his mental stability. He might be motivated right now but what about next month, next year? What if he falls off the wagon? He now dealing with addiction, drepression and who knows what. Is he getting treatment for this stuff, what's his status, is he recovered? Just all seems very uncertain. If there was some professionalism to the comeback announcement and him sounding fresh and motivated I'd be more convinced, but he sounds in termoil to me. Would be great but clearly a monumental task, if he manages a comeback he would be due some massive respect, back from the brink of who knows what.
I'd be a surprised if he only did coke a few times. He suffers from depression and the drug abuse is likely him self medicating, it's very common for people to self medicate when they haven't received proper treatment for their condition. I agree about him pushing himself too hard, too soon, that could be detrimental. Based on his vlogs he's not consuming carbs at all, which is pretty extreme for an athlete who will require it for energy. Doesn't sound like he's getting the proper nutritional advice to lose the weight in a controlled manner. As you've said he's gone from one extreme to another and that could lead to illness and injury.
He won't be, because there's so much to come back from that it's probably impossible to ragain his previous form if he even comes back at all. If monday's hearing ends badly for him, it might take a while before he's even able to come back. Then everything has to run smoothly with the BBBoC as well, to re-apply for a new license. Let's say that against the odds, everything goes the way Fury wants, and he can return to the ring within a short period of time. He still has to stay away from hedgehogs, possums, boars and other delicacies, plus keep up with a rigorous training scedule to remove the massive surplus in weight, and can't return to recreational or other drugs either. After all that it's the question how his body actually reacts to it. Then there's the option that not everything is going according to plan, like happens in real life... Don't forget that a big part is beyond his own control.
It would be an incredible comeback if he can do it. I'd say it's possible. Is it unlikely ? Yeah, with the plain facts of his condition it is. But men who win championships tend to do unlikely things. I never thought Tyson Fury would even amount to a contender-level heavyweight and he proved me very wrong, so I'm not writing him off yet.
