Fighters who were good but boring

Hopkins, Mayweather, Vlad, Emile Griffith, Ward,

 

Johnny "Mr. Negative" Nelson would be the poster child for this.

(As a side note, I met Johnny and Brendan Ingle in 1992 at a show in Hull - the only live boxing card in England at the time I was visiting, took a long train just so I could see love boxing there - and they couldn't have been nicer. But watching Nelson 'fight,' that's a different story.)

Marlon starling .great boxer text book .effective but a bit dull.

 

Hopkins became more "boring" after trinidad(Actually got more exciting against Pascal and later)

RJJ became cautious after McClellan got hurt then he got even less exciting when he started slowing down and getting hand problems 1999 and later

Mayweather became "boring" with age, hand problems and ascent in weight

Ward was always not just boring but his fights were repulsive and ugly for me because he forced most of his opponents into a grappling/mauling/dirty type fight that they couldnt really prepare for but he had been doing it his entire career and become a master at it and he is effective. To me a ward fight is like 2 guys agreeing to a basketball 1v1 but one guy is a volleyball pro and he forces the other guy to play volleyball with him in a dishonest ugly manner that nobody wants to see

Boring fights were never a problem for me, if you know boxing there is still plenty of skill and strategy to observe even if not that many punches flying.

"Dull but effective"....and a list of some my very favorite fighters to watch....ok,.... g'head and call me weird. I may have even left out some.

 

My sentiments exactly Contro! As a matter of fact, I enjoyed to the hilt so called "boring" 15 rounders back "in the day"(hate that expression)...like the Griffith-Archer, Tiger-Torres fights...a Griffith fight was a special treat, because he was so subtle, effective, and you knew that it would be going the full distance. I loved to see a master of the 15 round distance like Monzon plan and calculate his fight strategy around those "deep water" rounds of 13, 14 and 15. Sal Sanchez was also great at that as well.

 

Credit where it's due.
Ward resume, skills and talent are undeniable assets but I dare anyone to watch his olympic fights and tell me when and where you can find so many clinches in 8 minutes.

Jack "clutch n Grab" Johnson, perhaps the most boring HW champion of all time. He was the Floyd of his time, cherry pickin opponents that were no danger to him. Watch him in "action". His favorite combination was a stiff arm jab and leaping in to grab and hold. Ck out the "excitement". I probably gonna get heat from this but the proof is in the pudding.
Guillermo Rigondueax, watching was like watching paint dry.
