I think coming off a year and a half's layoff at 41 and going life and death with Joshua, trading those big punches and coming of the floor as he did proved a lot of my prejudices against Wlad to be, if not entirely wrong at least founded on a flawed argument. Apart from Walcott in their first fight and possibly Charles in their intial encounter I dont think any of Marciano opponents make a show with last week's Wlad and I would not make Rocky favourite over that version either!
The poll cast doubt on the percentage of those two qualities that Liston and Tyson possessed, both make my top ten. My reason for excluding Wlad from the top ten was largely based on my doubts about how much he had. Since I believe that doubt was erased last week I feel justified in replacing Marciano with him. I'm no fan of Wlad, he as bored me rigid in many fights Credit where credit is due.
Tyson showed plenty of heart in his defeats against Lewis and Holyfield. He took many hard shots, much more than Wlad. Wlad can't show much heart because of his chin. The intangibles Wlad showed against Johua was nothing outstanding.I haven't watched too many Liston fights.
He was okay for Comic Relief but when you tell a joke people need to understand the punch line! I'm sure he thinks he is devastating us all with his insight and sharp wit.
"his role as a serious player in Ukrainian politics adds to his stature." As a boxer? I think this is goofy logic. Mickey Walker painted. If critics decided he was another Van Gogh, would that make his record better as a fighter? A man being admirable or nasty outside the ring shouldn't effect how we view his record within the ring.
Just on Wlad Klitschko. I rate him 7th right now, but his final standing is still hostage to how well his conquerors perform in the future. If Fury and Joshua are blown out early by Wilder, let's say, Wlad putting up a competitive fight will look a lot less impressive. Most historical figures are somewhat hostage to later history. I remember a question I read once---"If Lincoln had lost the Civil War, what would this have done to Washington's historical standing?"
