I was saying many years ago Spinks would be in the mix with guys like Charles, Moore and Foster in the ring. He's one fantastic 175. Moore wasn't overly strong in his assertion here. I'd have all three in my five i reckon.

While Archie gave praise to Burley for handling him in their bout he never said much about his three losses to Charles except that he thought the second bout was very close and that he was on the verge of winning the third when he got tricked, so I'd never be too convinced of his opinion here. He also seemed miffed at times with the idea of Sugar Ray Robinson being the greatest fighter of all time.

I find it amazing. Charles had so many more fights over such diverse opposition. Other than the decision Over Qwai and acweightbdrained Gregory I don't see Spinks achievements coming close. Still Archie should know so go figure.

I am positive i read somewhere Moore saying he tried every trick he knew and changed strategies in the fights against Charles and still couldn't find a way past him.

Archie's opinion obviously counts for a lot. Spinks belongs in the same ring with himself, Charles, Foster, and whoever else. One of the best to be sure, at this level you're splitting hairs...

If you put spinks in the ring with Charles you get a great fight, that I'm certain of. You would probably have to have at least 3 fights between them to see who was the best, it was that close between them imo.

I am a big fan of Spinks .. he was fast, well conditioned, had a good reach and obvious power but feel he is a tiny bit over rated .. he was in a life and death fight against a faded Yaqui Lopez, he was in a painful war w Marvin Johnson before icing him, he was n an extremely tough fight w Eddie Davis right before moving up to heavyweight .. Davis had a very strong second half of their fight , bothering Spinks badly with his jab and uppercuts ...

Spinks had 2" on height and 3" in reach on Charles but I'd say Charles may have been faster, was an even better hitter and stronger .. I'm no one to debate Archie but maybe there is a bit more to it ..

Archie's is only on opinion and yes there could well be more to it. To be quite honest Charles achievements and ability at 175 border on insane.

I'd rate Moore and Charles above Spinks

Most rate Moore above Spinks so if Charles beat him multiple times, then............it is logical to put Charles above Spinks.

IMHO let's disregard Archie's 'weigh in' I think Ezz is the greatest LH EVER. Toiled in the 40's without a shot for a time due to the 'black freeze out'. Just look at the record! Perhaps one of the best top 5 pvp fighters ever.
And Eddie Gregory is STILL a better fighter than Michael Spinks!! I'm out, feel free to disagree.

Not to mention at heavyweight ... beating a super tough Walcott twice, going 15 w Marciano .. winning and defending the title like he did ..

Gus didn't freeze the blacks out, he froze out anyone that could beat him, which just happened to be a bunch of black guys and Joey Maxim lol

But Gus defended the title twice against Billy Fox.
