This is a offshoot from the gallant losing heavy weight thread. That was limited to heavy weight champ s going out on their shields. But which fighter from any weight, title or non title iyo gave the bravest, determined effort to win but failed? . One of the most emotive for me was Barry Mcguigan against Stevie cruz. Barry knocked down in the scorching heat but still trying to fight back was one of the bravest displays of boxing I've seen. Joe frazier been told to sit down at the start of the 15 th round in manila, heartbreaking for frazier. Joe Louis trying his best against the raging marciano! Few I can think of there which sums up the thread.
Joe Jeannette against Sam McVey in Paris ,49rds 2 hours and 24 minutes.Marathon Man! McVey only conceded when his eyes were totally shut. All for a joint purse of $6000!
Briggs vs Klitschko is always the first I think of, when a question like this comes up... but did anyone here watch last Saturday's fight between Kalid Yafai and Suguru Muranaka in Birmingham? Oh my God, that little Jap put up the gutsiest effort I have seen in a long, long time!
Yep he took a hell of a beating from vitali that day. How on earth he was still standing at the end of the fight I'll never know.
Tyrell biggs against tyson. Biggs was getting a hammerin in there with those body shots. He showed heart in that fight.
Holmes in the Tyson fight, he was trying with all his energy, wit, skill and will to stay up and continue fighting. But it was no use.
Frazier getting up every single time even after Foreman nailed him in the back of the head. Merchante had his head up his ass that night or was trying to look too good for the cameras or both. Lebedev when his eye was half the size of his head. WTF was everyone thinking that night. Taylor had his career beat out of him by Chavez even though i had him ahead. Just a few that spring to mind.
Harry Gibbs who was one of the men in line for the job had breakfast with Mercante and other boxing people the next morning. The talk naturally turned to the fight .Mercante asked Gibbs if he thought he had been slow in stopping it? Gibbs ,who was always very straightforward ,said "since you've asked me,yes" . I thought the referee stopping the Taylor fight was correct, his first duty is to the fighters , he isn't the timekeeper. He would have been justified ceasing hostilities earlier imo
