is Primo Carnera a guy who became an undisputed champion by winning the title by knockout or simply a hoax?
Primo earnt his place in history with a brutal uppercut. He wasn't the best of his era, but he was the best in the world on that night and such a small percentage of boxers are able to say that.
Won the worlds hwt championship when it really meant something legit, defended twice with a defense against one of the finest technical boxers ever to live. That's all that really needs to be said.
No shame in losing to Baer and Joe Louis. People forget after losing to Primo, uzcudun went off took max Schmeling to a draw in his next fight.
He's somewhere in between the options offered here. Insofar as beating one of the best technical boxers who ever lived, it didn't hurt having an 84 pound weight advantage... or as Classicists like to call it, disadvantage.
Legitimate oaf. Actually, prior to the last few weeks I only knew of Carnera through reputation and I admit that my opinion of him is higher now than it was before reznick's crusade to champion this champion/oaf. However this is down to learning more about his achievements rather than the videos and gushing praise he received from the 'Primo 3', although I will say they made a great effort. I just can't get that shadow boxing clip of the big oaf out of my mind - I was almost expecting him to stop, look round and start laughing like he was messing around, unfortunately he did not. I view the success of Primo Carnera as either; exhibit Z in the case for 'size matters' or a damning indictment of the level of competition in that era.
Decent skills, not overly talented but enough to get him to the title. Not the best of heavyweight champs but definitely not the worst. He's a legitimate champion in that he beat the man who beat the man. I don't see personally anything really stands out for me with primo in terms of skills and ability. I regard him as a Bruno type figure. Solid enough in some ways but lacking in others. In honesty I've only seen a few Carnera fight s or clips which rez posted, so I don't claim to be a expert on him, but he was a legitimate champ if that answers the question.
Didn't the great Joe Louis get knocked out by a champion from that era? If the era was so bad how could Joe Louis lose in it? I used to also think primo was a very weak Champion but I grew out of it. I never could get past the idea of Primo being so big not having something to do with his success. and I used to say things like "if he was the same size as everyone else we never would have heard of him". But primo had great success with men his own size too. This gave me a glimpse of how he might fare in the modern era. We cannot exclude Primo from the "big men with skills" group because he had skills too.
You described Carnera as," a great fighter" Therefore if you were honest you would have made the title of this thread . " Was Carnera A Great Fighter Yes Or No?". Instead of which you posed a loaded exaggerated question that ensures you get the result you want. Choklab = Zero Credibility!
You forget Uzcudun had not been rated in the top ten for 5 years.Schmeling had not won any of his last 3 fights when he drew with Uzcudun, and he subsequently beat him later.
One of the finest technical boxers who was a lightheavyweight without a punch, conceding over 80lbs.Loughran's weapon was a left jab, at 73" he was conceding12 inches of reach to Carnera . Shock result Carnera won! The only surprise in this fight was that Carnera not only couldn't stop Loughran ,he couldn't even floor him or wobble him! The other defence was against a man who had not been a ranked contender for 5 years! Let's give him 3 cheers ! One from each member of his fan club here!
You said in another thread Carnera was a very nice guy. Q. What does this have to do with his standing as a boxer? Q.On what do you base your assessment of his character ?
