Just wondering, with all those broken facial and body bones suffered by Willard and with those gloves which practically held no real protection for the hands of the wearer, did Dempsey's hands suffer any notable damage after that bout?

Probably not. Dempsey had 120+ professional fights up until that point so he was probably used to it.

As ray arcel said nobody could have beaten Dempsey on that day....too hungry and too ....good...on you tube you can see both Willard and Dempsey enter the ring with just wraps.....and....Willard shaking hands with dempsey...no spikes either

I think there is a lot of evidence that the damage was not as severe as reported. There was a thread one time that posted some news about Willard driving himself home and doing interviews the same day.

However, even though I believe that many head shots could theoretically cause the damage insinuated by the most graphic testimonies without foul play ..I still feel some of the blows by Dempsey were thrown with the intention of causing impact with an unconventional part of the glove. I have had a conversation with monte cox about this and he insists it was a "fore knuckle punch" Dempsey was looking to connect with, but for me, with an eye for modern boxing, some of the roundhouse blows on an open target Jack appears to favour the part of the flat part of a closed glove between thumb and fore finger where (as Willard claimed) Jack held a rail road spike.

I can't prove it, because jack open and closed his gloves which proves he had nothing held in his hands. But why favour that part of the glove? And how come he never threw that kind of punch again?

We know the taping of the gloves were witnessed. We know nothing fell out of Dempsey glove. Why did he throw that kind of punch? In his book Jack talks of the second and third knuckle as being the best place for impact yet when Jess is defenceless he is looking to deliberately hit him with the inside of the glove in a stabbing motion. I don't understand it.

Listen when Kearns gave that story of loaded gloves out everybody knew he was full of garbage...and he knew it too...Dempsey said if it were true of him loading gloves ...he would rather die first....Kearns was a jerk...to do that to someone who made a lot of money and brought fame to him speaks for itself

With all the training footage on Dempsey, it's clear he had extraordinary punching strength.

He clearly didn't need loaded gloves to deliver big power. If he did indeed load his gloves, he was going for murder.

Their were no loaded gloves. Photos exist of Dempsey in his corner ungloved up close and personal. You see nothing but thinly taped hands. Fleischer watched Dempseys hands being taped and he saw no loaded gloves. Loaded gloves never happened so forget it.

In terms of Willards injuries he was horrifically beaten. Worst beating in hwt boxing history.

At bouts end Willard had welts all over his body from Dempseys body blows, Willards face was cut to ribbons, cuts over both eyes, one eye completely closed shut, a huge hematoma covered the right side of his face, his right cheekbone was shattered, blood poured from his mouth. So much blood that it dripped down Willards body, down his legs.

Some list injuries in more detail such as multiple broken ribs, half dozen teeth knocked out, broken jaw. If you read the accounts of Fleischer and The NY Times most of these details are missing. However they are ALL very conclusive that Willard was horrifically beaten.

Loaded gloves theory was proven to be bs decades ago. Dempsey even won a lawsuit over it.
If the gloves were loaded Dempsey would have had 2 broken hands.
Doc Kearns sold this BS story cause he was broke. No truth to it at all.

Back in the 1950's magazines like "True" and "Saga", used to drag up the "Loaded Gloves" story every so often, if they needed to increase 'readership' that particular month.

No. No loaded gloves. Dempsey was, as been stated hungry for the title. Probably in his mind if he had lost to willard he would never have gotten another chance. He'd struggled for so many years, so he knew he had to get jess out of there. He was also a devastating puncher as we all know. So that comes in to play. Willard was a tough guy with a lot of heart and pride imo. That's why he kept getting up and takin jack s shots. He couldn't defend himself properly but he was doing his best to stay upright .so jacks punchers were doing the upmost damage. Jack couldn't miss so willard did end up with the facial injuries that have been described.

Go on youtube and watch some of the "full fight" of that first round. If you read some of the fight descriptions, it makes it sound like the punch that sent Willard to the canvas that first time was one of the first punches thrown by Dempsey. They had some exchanges before then, including a lot of open glove clinching (the theory that Dempsey had a spike that he was holding in his hand).

Willard didn't know how to handle Dempsey. His prefight strategy was Willard holding out his jab and getting Dempsey as he rushed across the ring at him. As you see from the fight, Dempsey circled and moved and didn't charge in.

Next factor in that back then, after a knockdown the fighter didn't have to return to a neutral corner. Dempsey is hanging right there as soon as Willard gets up and pummels him. Basically, teeing off on Willard as soon as he stands up.

There were no loaded gloves. I think that Willard wanted to believe it because he was dismantled by Dempsey and given the worst beating he's ever had.

Dempsey broke sparring partner Big Ben Wray 7foot 300lbs jaw in 2 places with one punch, he also hit another so hard in the body he had to have a kidney removed. He cracked a couple of George Godfrey's ribs in training. Willard was a victim of his own durability.

But I still want to know why Dempsey was using that roundhouse stabbing motion as if he were holding something and favouring the area between thumb and first knuckle. I know he wasn't holding a spike, I just want to know why he was using that part to hit Willard with?

I hoped the sparring with Big Ben Wray is in the book. Hopefully I have not got that far yet. It sounds interesting.
