Gentlemen: ^^^^^^^^^^^ Excellent comments from ALL above. When you piece together all the tidbits of info you guys know....the Meehan vs Dempsey "picture" comes into clearer focus. Good job!

dempsey1234, I have seen previous comparisons between Butterbean and Willie Meehan on boxing forums, coming away with the feeling that they were absolutely ludicrous. Yes, I should have addressed the possible reasons why Jack Dempsey had so much trouble with Willie Meehan in four-round bouts, but the silly comparison between Butterbean and Meehan cropped up again.

A combination of his experience, savvy, ability and boxing style probably enabled Meehan to cope with Dempsey, who had some problems with fighters who knew what they were doing in the ring. The fact that Meehan fought Dempsey in four-round bouts exclusively may helped the former in some way.

Just like Obrien vs Johnson and many others a tricky boxer can evade the bigger puncher over a short duration bout. Simply time runs out before they can be "caught".

The three right uppercuts prior to the blow that koed Sharkey were not low.

Interesting that the 2 Tunney-Dempsey fights were to be over 10 rounds. Maybe it was Tunney that manipulated the 10 round length, and not "old Dempsey".

Dempsey had trouble with movers, fighters who had less footwork and were stationary for him to land on made it much easier bc he had difficulties hitting moving targets...its that simple.

People kept making him sound like Butterbean when he looks more like a small Tua. Or Sam Peter.
