Hatton vs Cotto

I think at 140, Hatton would've won a close decision especially if it went the distance. Cotto was always for the most part, a six round fighter. Really think Ricky's pressure would've worn Cotto down. Cotto of course could score some KD's or possibly get a KO in the early rounds.

 

Imagine the hooks. It would have been a blast of a fight. Cotto would prevail in a close, aggressive, and dangerous fight for both guys. Fun to think about.

 

I think by the time Hatton was becoming a force at 140 Cotto was already looking at moving to 147. Then when Hatton Tried to move up to 147 against Collazo (meant to be a straightforward win) he struggled and nearly got beat so he moved back down to 140. No way was either man going to go to the other mans weight class. Hatton did go up to 147 later to fight Floyd but that's because it was a super fight $$£££$$

 

So Floyd essentially beat a not very effective version of Hatton, especially given many felt Collazo beat Hatton.

 

I suppose that's one way of looking at it.

 

i thought Hatton was already a champ while cotto was at 140? I remember Hatton doing the analysis to one of his fights and he was asked about fighting him & hatton said something along the lines "yeh thanks for that"

There was a time though, it was a very small window though so i dont think either fighter can be blamed, just one of those things where the times didnt quite line up

Hatton beat kosyta in June 2005 & cotto didnt move up to 147 till Dec 2006

 

But had Hatton even fought in the USA at that point? I doubt Americans even knew who Hatton was until he beat Castillo

i dont know im from manchester, i would of thought when he was steamin through oliveia v.phillips and beating up Kostya would of got him known in america
he was Rings fighter of the year when he beat Tszyu

but no he hadnt had fought in america properly,, he fought on someones undercard really early in the night but that doesnt do alot for his name really

 

I did read his autobiography and he says he always wonders what a fight that might have been. I remember Cotto struggling to make weight for the Paulie fight, guess the window was too small and it was never meant to be.

 

Hatton had fought in the states a couple of times early on his career. Then went on to beat Phillips pendleton etc. He was a known quantity but he hadn't steppes up as yet..he was supposed to fight Kelton pinto and if he had won that Cotto was being mentioned but that fell through and it all went quiet..at 140 in his prime Hatton was a nightmare.. Strong as an ox, fast feet good chin and stamina and wicked body shorts and variation. I always thought Cotto was vulnerable at 140 at would have made Hatton a narrow faviourte. He wastes his best years and by the time he suffocated kosta he was arguably past his best.. He'll even Juan lazcano gave him loads of trouble in what was supposed to be a gimme.

 

I've always disagreed with that stance, Floyd had only had 3 fights at WW pre_hatton
only one against a true WW (Baldomir), Zab was a career JWW that moved up as was
Sharmba Mitchell. Ricky physically was by far the larger guy in the ring, regardless of the
fact that he moved up to challenge Floyd. The size issue was non existent. Floyd had
no size advantage in the fight, Hatton was fighting a smaller man.
