Ok, I don't claim to understand MMA, but why did CBS show this crap in prime time??? Is it that huge now? I admit I did watch the main event and was totally unimpressed. The guy he beat looked like a total scrub (what was up with that ear?????? Good God) and Slice looked shot after about two minutes. I don't understand the appeal of this stuff. Kimbo Slice may have the look and the mystique, but I find it distressing that a major network puts this dreck on when a kid like Kelly Pavlik should be just as marketable as Slice but he'll be on HBO rather than the big networks. Not sure if this is a bad sign for boxing, but it is regretable. On the other hand, MMA looks to me like is more crossover with the WWE crowd, so maybe this isn't such a bad omen for boxing.
Big, Ugly, Black guy = White male fascination. There are more Jack Presscots out there than you might believe.
Didnt Kimbo have kind of mad internet following in the Underground fight scene, Its all about money and marketing Kimbo has 100,000+ people watching his underground stuff on the internet, he gets signed by the MMA they get 75,000+ new viewers, allowing for the fact 25,000 probably already watched MMA (not exact or real figures just an example) Im pretty sure if he didnt have that following Kimbo would be not be fighting on TV let alone primetime,
Kimbo supposedly fought on the streets for money and has never lost--just a brawler--no skills but thats MMA for you.
His fights were on you tube and he lost once, to a cop called Gannon. He is just a big strong monster that they are trying to skill-up
Scroll down a bit. Video is embedded: http://www.almostkilled.com/videos/Fight_Videos/Kimbo_Vs_Gannon
I don't get all this Kimbo Slice and MMA stuff either. :-( I suppose it would appeal to a younger market, coming off of WWE. It's like WWE except real. Basically two mis-matched dudes stand there, trade off a couple of punches then it goes to the ground and they claw at each other for 2 mins. :huh If I wanted to watch that, I'd go down my local. and I saw all I wanted to see of Kimbo after the Sean Gannon thing, like I suspected, put him in with someone that's not just some street bum and he was gassed in minutes. Looked like he was trying to breathe out of his arse and all his "boys" jumping in to save him when that Gannon guy put him in trouble.
I saw it, and was unimpressed with the production for sure. Has anybody seen the movie Idiocracy? All that was left to happen was for Stiffler to come busting in there in a Monster Truck and the script was complete. Seems funny too the boooo's were pooring down through out the broad cast, at the very first second blood wasn't squirting. First time Kimbo didn't score a :45 second KO, he was booo'd out of the cage.:yep They will be back on Spike TV in no time.
Kimbo is garbage. He caught (the notoriously glass jawed) Thompson flush numerous times, and STILL couldn't put him down.
Was ridiculous. Every time he hurt that cat, the guy would grab Kimbo (because 4 punches drained all life from Kimbo), Kimbo would try a DDT type of deal (fall back smashing his head in the mat), and dude would be on top of him with KImbo on his back. Ground and pound time, and Kimbo looked to be in bad trouble several times.
Kimbo is a bum. It's just big because of his name. He has no skill. It's like if ABC had a night of fights with Iron Mike as the ain event. I bet 5-10x as many viewers would tune in. Not because Mike is a skilled fighter anymore, but just because it's Mike Tyson.
