I always saw Berto as a trial horse for Al Haymon. Haymon sold Berto to HBO and they made him a name.

Berto's saving grace is that the guy looks GREAT shadow boxing. You can watch him through his whole training camp and be like "WOW THIS GUY LOOKS AWESOME", but when he's in the ring, hes clearly not that good. I think it boils down to his chin, general durability, and he isn't the smartest fighter style wise.

Feel like there has to be at least one fighter who is worse than him but got bigger paydays. I do believe he was THE FASTEST welterweight of his day in terms of pure speed. Not that he could use it as well as others though.

 

I can believe that. Joshua's team needed to give him a high portion of the purse though. It makes sense, otherwise dude would have held his title hostage.

Charles Martin, Deontay Wilder, Derick Chisora, those Australians Mundine, Green, and Geale, so many heavyweights. When it comes to heavyweights it's almost harder to find a boxer who hasn't made a million dollar purse. Fighters aren't paid based on skills or records. Size probably has a much better correlation than skill does with earning power. Guys like Ricardo Lopez or Roman Gonzalez make peanuts even being p4p some of the best fighters on the planet. But almost any heavyweight contender who gets a title shot makes a million dollars now. Rios, Ortiz, and Guerrero are about Bertos level and they made millions. Paulie Malignaggi had at least one million dollar purse. Mitch Blood Green. Chris Algieri.

But I think the OP's point stands that Berto is one of the worst resume/accomplishment fighters that consistently gets huge paydays. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact he never looks bad, guys got great coordination/speed etc. So whoever beats him gets to look really good to more casual fans who don't know his past.
