You are pointing out Spence's flaws which is cool but Pac, Thurman and Crawford also has flaws and you have to take theirs and make a proper comparison before you say that Spence would be in big trouble. They would also be in big trouble.
He slipped a lot of shots that weren't noticed, because I think at least subconsciously, a lot of us were pulling for Brook to retain, even if we're Spence fans. Spence slipped shots and fired R hooks over the top. He used the catch and counter well, and while Brook, a solid A level operator in MOST PPLs opinions, obviously wasn't gonna be rolled over as if he were Malignaggi or Khan. Brook scored like he did, b/c of his level. Spence took what he couldn't slip and made the Champ pay, in effect, showing his own level. As for Thurman....his power is nil compared to Brooks as he hit Porter with everything and the kitchen sink and never hurt him. Brook made him do the stank leg on several occasions, taking a step back, which NO ONE of Porters prior opponents had done. As for Crawford.....yeah, he got his finest, and most legitimate win over Diaz last week, and he was untouchable at times, having fought entirely from the SP stance, which as Diaz admitted, was not something he was completely prepared for. BUT.....Diaz never got that shot on Bud. That shot that Gamboa got on Bud. As for his chances vs Spence. I cant say that Bud might be the next Pac/May clone. He's certainly got the right attributes, but beating a mini Wlad without the power(Postol who needed to clinch for 8 rds while Mathysee tired), and other overmatched opponents doesnt make me believe he'd trouble Spence. Cause.....one L hand/R hook on Buds jaw, and it's good night sweetheart good night. Spence power at WW is unmatched. Unless Marquez is allowed an NDA and 9:1 TIE ratios like he was for Pac 4.
All fair points. I think what bothers me is that it was some simple stuff he shouldve been able to deal with. I couldnt believe how much trouble with the right hand Spence had pretty much most of the fight. Its goes into the lack of head movement and he simply doesnt use his feet on defense at all. Come to think of it Spence reminds me of Tito. Not so much in style but in the sense theyre both big power punching ww who dont exactly move very well in the ring and dont have the best defense or greatest of chins but adequate enough. I think Spence could have a very similar career. Pretty much cleans the clock of anyone who dares stand with him but struggle with boxers who use movement. Yeah i know, bit of a random thought.
Spence gave himself a B- so you're not alone in criticizing. But you are basically criticizing him for not having a perfect defense. But he is not a defense first fighter. He's an offensive fighter with a very good defense. Some of your criticisms are trivial or non-existent. Spence is a kid and did something almost everyone thought was impossible. I can't agree that he loses to Thurman and Crawford, "pretty badly" or otherwise.
I watched the fight twice. To be honest, I don't know the sport well enough to pick up on these details!
You are not the only one. What was revealing was that he wasn't able to make adjustments to the same shots Brook was landing over and over again. What really impressed me was his chin. Along with his grit, he never let up even when he was clearly losing in the first half of the fight. Like AJ, Spence learned a lot on Saturday night. I have a feeling he comes out a much better fighter from this
True. And Spence looks to be gunning for Thurman. Hopefully, that fight gets made and all questions will be answered. Looking forward to that fight.
I think Spence showed that he is tough, decently skilled, yet he is still human. The other thing is... Brook is a top welter. Spence vs Brook was mostly even, so on that point he acquitted himself well showing he's on the same level as the other top welters.
Now if Brook had fought an amazing fight id agree but i honestly thought Brook fought like sht. He left too many opportunities on the table that he just didnt exploit. Like Brook but was very disappointed in his performance. Yes part of that is due in part to spence especially his body work which was A+ in my book.
There are fighters, whom from an astute observer, can see glimpses of generational talent. In Spence, his prowess offensively, and his subtle defense(footwork head movement, catch and counter, tucked chin, etc) were all highly visible in the Brook fight. VS Algeri, Bundu, and a couple of his other B level wins, some/many of those attributes came out. But ???s remained because of the LOC. VS Brook, he was forced to bring out his A game, at least at this weight(I say that b/c I feel 160, even 168 are possibilities for him) and the power/accuracy and ability to catch and shoot, while taking damage, make him a MONSTER. And not just at 147. Not by a long shot. IMO.......if Spence had fought GGG last fall, we might be talking about Spence vs Canelo today instead. This kid is 175lbs in perfect shape between fights, and adding 5 lbs of lean muscle to his still growing frame, would make him nothing less than a monster at LMW/MW and even SMW. Unless some fundamental flaw is exposed, I can't see ANYTHING SHORT of a HOF career, and a potential for P4P ATGness.
how so many "fans" can't see the glaringly obvious. Spence in a monster as is Aj, TC & canelo + couple others . these Monsters will carry our sport for the next decade
