No actually it wasn't, Levinsky was a busted flush. Here is the proof an extract for Dempsey1234's excellent post! The other world's championship is held by -Georges Carpentier, who took the light-heavyweight title by beating Battling Levinsky. Levinsky claimed it because he had taken a decision over Jack Dillon in 1916. But just how far Levinsky went back after beating Dillon in a decision in one of their many engagements is shown by his record. From October, 1916 the date of the Dillon bout, to October, 1920, when he met Carpentier, Levinsky fought 52, ring battles, and won only six of them all on decisions. His real finish as a first-class boxer came when he was foolish enough to meet Jack Dempsey in 1918 and was knocked out in three rounds. When Levinsky fought Carpentier he was fat and slow and had lost all trace of the skill and dash of his earlier years in the ring. That's his only win of note at175lbs
Different people seem to have taken different views of it. Some were impressed by the fact that he was able to put Levinsky away, and this seems to have been a factor that generated interest in matching Carpintier against Dempsey. So I would not be entirely dismissive of this win.
Hey @klompton2 Have you ever covered the Siki-Carpentier bout? What is your take on the ending? Does anyone know what the general census is?
You can hold whichever opinion you wish, fact is Levinsky was in decline and he wasn't that special to start with! Carpentier got his shot at Dempsey on the strength of being the European champion and stopping the very moderate Beckett, that and his war record. Dempsey had already flattened a prime Levinsky and Greb beat the p*ss out of him five times too, beating him was a springboard to nothing. Levinsky's title was protected by the no decision rule. Levinsky is Carp's best win at175lbs yet a poster on here thinks he is top15 all time!
Levinsky – Carpentier Set For the Big Encounter; Opinions of Experts Jack Dempsey-“Levinsky. Darn it, why couldn’t I get first crack at Carpentier? Otto Floto-(Sports editor of Kansas Post): “I like Carpentier,“ He looks very fast, aggressive and wonderfully clever as a hitter.” Willie Lewis-“Carpentier is a good two-fisted fighter and a wonderfully fast boxer. I have not seen him go in six years and am not so sure of him against the speedy Levinsky, but if he is at his best, I think he will win.” Leo P. Flynn-“I have not seen Carpentier in actual battle, but he will have to do more than whip the slow moving heavyweights of Europe to give him a chance to beat Levinsky. I think Levinsky will win. The bout with that big poke Beckett didn’t prove anything except the size of Beckett’s heart. Jack Kearns-“Levinsky will spill the beans for a Dempsey- Carpentier fight” Billy Gibson-“I will have a good oral wager on Battling Levinsky” Tom O’Rourke-“It all depends on Levinsky’s condition. I like Carpentier and will have a bet on him.” George B. Harris-“I have seen Levinsky in half a dozen of his ring engagement and was very much impressed with his cleverness. George M Cohan-“It will be a great battle Carpentier’s aggressiveness will be offset by the defensive work of Levinsky. Benny Leonard-“Carpentier is a good two handed puncher but whom is he to hit with Levinst ky in the ring” George Engel-“Carpentier is a good man, but I think Levinsky, will prove to cagey for him. Jack Britton-“I don’t care about betting, as a rule but I will make a wager of $5,000, on the cleverest light heavyweight in the ring. That’s Levinsky. Tex Rickard-“Carpentier has a big chance of getting beaten. He will be up against one of the toughest and cleverest men in his class next Tuesday night. Freddie Keppel-“I think Carpentier will win, he can HIT.” Matt Hinkle(Cleveland promoter)- “I have not seen the Frenchman really fight, but he will have to be a real wonder man to beat Levinsky.” Senator Bill Lyons- “I don’t make any bones about my opinion. I’m for Levinsky. I think the Battler will outgame and outspeed the Frenchman.” Jack Curley-“why, you ought to know that I think Carpentier is a mortal cinch. He’s wonderful.”
Charles Greb - Middleweight Tunney Fitz - Middleweight Johnson H - Delaney - Carpentier beats him Loughran Berlenbach - Beats him Spinks Langford Gibbons - Possibly Hill - Possibly Jones Jnr Conteh - Carpentier beats him Qawi - Moore Saad - Carpentier beats him Fox - Billy Fox? Lol Rosenbloom - Beats Slapsie Muhammad - Dillon Conn Bivins - Heavyweight Marshall - Possibly Galindez - Carpentier beats him Johnson M - Carpentier beats him Stribling - Heavyweight Maxim - Possibly Torres - Possibly Foster Kovalev - Lol Thats top 14-19. I think for a statement that was off of the top of my head that was pretty damn close. Epic fail.
Epic comedy. Again, he doesn't have the credentials or footage to choose him over Maske, Hill, Williams, Toney, Tarver, Jones or Hopkins. He wouldn't even rate in the top ten over the past couple decades.
Did Siki knee him in the balls? Very clear foul. Carpentier at one time was rated as a top ten ATG at lt hwt.
Yes, and the division was less than 20 years old. We now have another 100 years of history in this division.
This is going to be very enjoyable! Greb was the US light heavyweight Champion. Leaving aside the myriad ranked heavyweights he beat. He beat the following light heavies at or near 175lbs Jack Dillon Mike McTigue x2 Billy Miskex 2 Tommy Gibbonsx3 Battling Levinskyx 5! The reigning LHvy Champ Maxie Rosenbloom Gene Tunney The reigning US Lhvy Champ Tommy Loughran Kid Norfolk Fitz= Heavyweight .Middle Weight ,Light heavyweight worlds champion! Delaney Light heavyweight Champion beat Berlenbach Rojas Rosenbloom Uzcudun McTigue Risko Renault Gorman Flowers Drew with Loughran What basis is there for picking Carpentier to beat him? How does he beat Tommy Gibbons? He won't be stopping him and he can't out box him! Conteh would stop Carpentier,I'm pretty sure of that. Tiger Jack Fox numb nuts! Fox beat Walcott Rosenbloom Gainer Trammell Dudas Olin Rosenbloom beat, leaving out the heavies. Slattery Braddock Lewis Walker Scozza Godwin Olin Lomski Fox Gainer His resume sh*ts all over Carpentier's, explain how he loses to the Frenchman? Bivins fought at middle, Light heavy, and heavyweight,as a light heavy he beat. Moore Christoforidis Lesnevich Sheppard Yarosz Maxim Pastor Soose Mauriello Galindez beat Rossman Hutchins Douglas Kates Burnett Ahumada Peralta Muhammad Fourie A far superior resume than Carpentier's solitary win over a good light heavy. Marvin Johnson doesn't have a very deep resume, but has wins over Galindez Parlov Davis Emebe Williams Stewart Douglas Which compare more than favourably with Carpentier's win over a past it Levinsky. Stribling fought at every weight from feather to heavy. At lhvy he beat Slattery Gorman Levinsky Risko Von Porat Rosenbloom Again a superior resume. I asked you to explain your reasoning for placing Carpentier inside the top all time 15 you didn't. You can't justify it on the basis of his resume because he only has one decent win at 175lbs! If ignorance is bliss ,you must be euphoric!!!
Its fine ,you 've done yourself enough damage for the week! You were right about one thing, you're off your head!
