Hmm. How about prime undefeated kessler? Prime undefeated Lacy? At the time he was underdog in both fights. Also fought Hopkins at LHW (I think in Calzaghe's first fight at the weight). Hopkins may have been old but Joe was also at the end of his career. Look what Bernard did afterwards, that was a great win. Joe gets underrated because he spent nearly ten years d1cking about (which is fair comment). Joe in his prime had a phenomenal workrate, excellent skills, cast iron chin AND A REAL PUNCH. People forget that because by the time he was known globally his hands had gone and he had to adjust his style. Both Joe and Ward have good chins and neither land knockout blows by the time they could have fought so this definitely goes the full 12. I favour Joe but it would definitely have been close.
yeah he was injured, but even then theres always an exception to the rule. joe chickened out of facing kessler multiple times, but I give him credit for eventually getting in the ring with him and beating a one handed kess. of course he was the underdog, a holder of an unreocnigsed title who has done nothing else SHOULD be the underdog. noone recognised his 15 defences, so he'd done very little to the world outside cardiff. But you know full well Lacy wasnt much good, he was beaten by plenty of middlers, so you appear to be arguing joe is one of those middlers. 43, dont pretend that great. great workrate, outstanding, awkward SP style, good chin too but lets not pretend his skills or chin or punch were elite. joe was the living defnition of a mid accuracy featherfist due to the way he threw volume and speed.
I still don't believe you watched the fight, Ward did not beat Kessler "from pillar to post", do you even know what that means? Sure, Ward was winning but in no way was Kessler getting his "ass whooped", it was a Dr stoppage in an ugly fight. You do know that it's not up to the fighter to decide if he wants to continue or not when they are cut right? If the Dr would of thought that that the cut in the Miranda fight was bad enough he would of stopped that fight also.
I don't believe you can read a fight from a technical perspective. Kessler was clueless in there and got beaten in areas of boxing he had no experience in. He fought Eurobums from mid range all his life. He's a one dimensional fighter. Ward exposed his inability to exchange on the inside. He was whooped one -sided. The fight wasn't competitive in the slightest.
I never said the fight was competitive, I said it was no "ass whooping" or beating "pillar to post". The fight did not deliver and turned out to be a boring clinch&headbutt fight and I would of been "clueless" also if I showed up for a fight and my opponent did that. Ward won, no doubt, but it was not as impressive or exciting as when Calzaghe did it.
