I would let him fight amateurs and try to get him to the Olympics. Professional? He's a man he can do what he wants. If he has excellent management and gets moved like the eastern european fighters do (less than 15-20 fights by the time they get a title shot/are at the top of the division). I would not let him go guns blazing with a shitty amateur record and start fighting for 200 bucks per rd as a paid loser. No, he has to be the "golden boy" so to speak. There is absolutely no money in boxing unless at the top of the divisions. Fighters should prepare themselves in the amateur system if they want to be elite.
If you are getting concussions every week from sparring then you aren't sparring...you're the punching bag! But seriously, if you are getting concussions most weeks from sparring then you need to change something. You shouldn't ever get a concussion from sparring.
I've thought about this since I have kids, one of them ain't cut out for any type of combat lol, but if they were, I'd be ready to throw in the towel if I don't like what I'm seeing.
Yeh i got a strong head but weak body so when i got tired and i oftenndid because of my work and life id train hard for 1 or 2 months get really fit then life would keep me from the gym and id lose it and restart a vicious cycle. Im not gna act like it was impossible to train during those hard times but i guess i wasnt that motivated either.
I made my son take karate until he got a black belt for self-defense purposes( he hated it) but I never tried to force him to box. However, if he wanted to box, I would support his decision.
If my kid is bright, then no (although I'd like to think they'd decide that themselves) If they are as dumb as a box of rocks... What's to lose?
My oldest son wanted to box, his best friend boxes. I wouldn't let him. I've personally sparred enough that there was no way I'd let him, no ****in way.
if its what he loves, yes. life is a risk, and risk is where living takes place. i have known people who have done more living in a span of 5 years than a rat race contestant has done in 50. i have accrued memories that still make me feel the joy i felt when i formed them, and some that still make me feel the pain. today, i have the luxury of pulling up those that bring me pleasure, and i get to live again.
Only if he is willing to go blind for the fans. None of that coward quitting style.. My son should be prepared to die in the ring so keyboard warriors don't write nasty things about him. Their opinions matter way more than my sons health.
Only if he has no other viable options and has elite world class talent. He better have defense too. Even then ill try to steer him toward a different sport for scholarship opportunities. If hes even slightly intelligent and studious its a big fat no, he better apply himself and hit the books or find a profession. But as far as self defense and fitness all my kids will learn martial arts.
For your information, The risk of concussions are much higher in several other sports --- hockey, football. soccer etc.
