Kell Brook should of took at least one year off after Golovkin

The IBF had already extended his deadline and then called for purse bid, there wasn't much he could do

 

Speaking of damage...

Lots of posters have been strangely on damage control since last Saturday.

 

The B Level fighter was 4-2 up my scorecards going into the 7th. He was 4-2 up on the official cards as well, 5-1 on Froch's. Spence won because of a few reasons...

1) The weight drain - it was clear it took its toll on Brook. If any top athlete within the space of 8 months adds 13lbs of muscle and drops back down in weight they won't be the same "peak" athlete. Brook on the day of the fight managed to get the weight off, he never really had much training AT that weight. Like if he did some cardiovascular tests and other tests to see how he compared to himself from before the weight gain he'll get nowhere near the numbers and personal bests he would have had.

2) Brook's always been prone to cuts, not much you can do to train your skin to protect you from heavy-handed blows to the eye. If that injury never occurred he would have beaten Spence on the scorecards as he was clearly out-boxing him on the outside. Once the cut happened, Spence managed to get inside and wore Kell down with bodyshots and hooks to the injury.

If they had a rematch at 154lb after the first bout I would personally have Brook as favorite going into it, for 2 reasons.

1) This is Brook's natural weight now, he'll be more powerful, sturdy and have much better stamina at this weight to last 12rds of action.
2) I don't think Spence's power will increase at this weight, just as GGG's wouldn't increase at 168lb
3) 154lb Spence is much slower and easier to counter than 147lb Spence, this plays right into Brook's hands.

In conclusion

I think at the moment Spence is the best at 147lb due to his youth and freakish power at this weight. His "elite" skills are still a myth to me, the power is real. The kid can punch. He reminds me of Paul Williams. Eventually, after he moves up to 154lb/160lb he'll lose his physical advantages and will lose quite a few bouts vs top opposition.

 

"B level fighter"

He was outboxing spence. Spence was relying on higher work rate and combinations. Brook had better speed and timing. Spence was definitely embarassed as he prides himself on those things. That's why he was making excuses in the interview about not feeling as sharp. I agree Spence has more than Brook, but to call Brook "B Level" is an insult to both Brook, Spence, and your own boxing IQ .

 

I was at the fight live. It was very evident after 6 rounds brook gassed and spence appeared to gain energy from this and got stronger. Making weight clearly killed brook but no credit can be taken from spence, I was also clear the fight changed once brook had tired and his eye socket was broke. He became too defensive, he was having success with spence when spence was on the backfoot an he was also timing spences jab and coming right back over the top. I wasn't overly impressed with much from spence except his fitness. He appears to be a guy who can do 12 solid rounds, not often you see that in fighters today. They usually tire out after 9

 

It's not a good idea to use Froch's scorecard to support your score. He's the worst most biased judge in history. The Brit bias from the commentary team was up to it's usual standard led by Froch. I gave Brook 2rds and that is being kind. Spence had a consistent jab with good right hooks lefts and the better body attack and overall cleaner harder punches. Spence defended himself better with a high guard. Brook landed a handfull of nice straight rights and left hooks and countered well but there was glove in most of Brooks shots. I know a lot of guys think that just because a guy counters he wins but he has got to be countering something. It was quite noticeable in the 1st 6 Brook attempting to hold whenever Spence hung a good shot on him but Spence would have no part of a clinch, kept his hands free and worked the body in close. I don't know where this cut is you are talking about. I didn't see any cut just a swollen eye caused by a broken orbital bone which was caused by consistent jabs and right hooks in the 1st 6rds. All these ifs and buts about the injury comes down to fact that Spence smashed him with hard shots to the eye. He was all done after 6rds. Sure he was weight drained and had a dodgy eye but everyone new that before the fight except the Brit fan boys. Even without those factors Spence is still the superior fighter and beats him any time at any weight. It might take a little longer and he may not stop him but he will still wear him down with body shots. He is one of the best body punchers in the game. Spence was actually a little off on the night and will perform better in the future now that he has got his 1st big fight out the way. If you read my prediction posts you will see I predicted Brook to be worn down by the body shots and for his eye to come away. I am neither British nor American and I make big money on fights like this because I assess these fights with my head and not with bias.

 

Spence just had more grit and was willing to go that extra yard. I suspect if the going got even tougher for Spence - that he would've just dug deeper. That is the part the difference in this fight IMO.

 

2 broken eye sockets in his last 2 fights and you want him to jump 3 weight classes ? Jnr's a p ussy compared to Brook.

I don't know about a full year off, but he probably shouldn't have taken on such a dangerous opponent in Spence for his next fight.

Still have to commend the guy for looking out for the tough challenges. I wouldn't mind seeing him fight Khan for a big money fight and calling it a career afterward. I will say though, he's a lot more skillful than I thought he was and he seems like he has a lot left in the tank. He just got beat by better opposition in his last 2 fights.

Couldn't make it up could ya, damned if you do, damned if ya don't with boxing folk....

 

Only thing what annoys me about this whole thing is the Spence fanbois saying he dominated Brook from the opening round, eventually wearing him out because he's elite and Brook is not.
Fact is, Brook was winning on the GGG fight before the stoppage and any unbiased boxing fan could see Brook was up 4-2 after rd6 vs Spence before fatigue set-in.

He lost both fights for different reasons, he sure as hell wasn't "dominated" in neither from a pure boxing standpoint. It was injuries and fatigue at having to cut that weight for Spence, and moving up 2 weight classes vs the hardest p4p puncher today for GGG.

Brook on a p4p basis is on both of their levels, as he more than matched them in different ways.
