Is 23 too late to start boxing to become any sort of decent in the boxing game?

    As the title says

I've always wanted to get into some kind of combat sport but never knew which one

I figured boxing would be a good base to have and then add 1 or 2 more things over the years.

I'm drastically out of shape atm, I've let my self go down beyond the gutters.

I'm 5'8 and weigh 217, most of which is lard atm.

I'd like to get down to 140 or so as I've got a Tyson type physique.

My legs are my biggest body parts along with back and traps and shoulders.

What weight would you recommend me to stay at?

    Thanks

Wow you're built like me. 5'8" and I used to be heavy as ****. Highest weight was 245!! My best weight, in my 20's, was 176 and I looked great. I'd suggest cutting weight before or during training, preferably before so you can train more effectively. Once you get down to 170's or 160's just kind of feel it out, see how you feel. I have thick legs too so I'm short, slim, and heavy. Everyone thinks I'm 160 but really I'm currently 180's, they don't notice my calves.

23 is a bit old to START if you want to do it competitively because there's so much to learn and experience is important. I say go for it, spar and see how you do.

Oh btw, 5'8", we're most effective at 147, maybe 154. That's a lot of weight to cut.

Starting age of 23 with 5'8 height and 217 pounds of weight? Prepare to get a call from Deontay Wilder.

    Thanks for the advice pal

I'll see what weight I feel strong and fast at.

Atm it's just trying to find a decent gritty gym in the UK

All the gyms near me are all commercial and i don't like that.

I don't think I'll compete as this will be a hobby but hey if I am any decent at it I might take a crack at it :)

Yea I want to train as a hobby, and spar to see where I'm at. I'm 27, too late to go pro lol.

Last year I started boot camp at 201, dropped down to 175 by the end. I felt great but a lot of people thought I was sick lol. One thing I noticed was I lost physical strength, lifting and such. But I was much faster and lighter. I train on a heavy bag at home, I could train harder and longer, my punches lost that thudding power and were more snappy.

I want to get into the 160's but nothing lower.

You have to be special like Martinez, Rahman and Hopkins to achieve something serious starting at 20 or after... Ray Austin and Tony Thompson didn't start boxing until their late 20s though I believe.

loads of people are starting late now due to the falling standards necessary to achieve the level just below world.

Unless you are one of the crets who thinks boxers has "evolved" to be the best ever.... not sure how you explain the falling standards of entry level then.

I'm 5'10 245 and 17 but I don't want to loose power but I really want to gain stamina and speed what would be my ideal weight same as the guy who made the thread I have massive thighs but very big shoulders I have a massive frame even before I put on all my weight

217 lbs at that weight? Your body is probably ****ed up bro, because of years of constant consuming processed food which contains a lot of estrogen.

Take boxing as a hobby and see if you enjoy it.

Just remember the words of George Foreman when he won the heavyweight championship at the age of 45: "If you can dream it, you can be it."
